mnealtx 0 #51 April 2, 2005 Best of luck with it, WW! From an ex-USAF type to a hopeful USAF-type: Do NOT go in "general" - they can put you were they want you. Get your ASVAB scores and see what you qualify for. Pick a job you'd like to do out of that list. Re: Tourette's - no advice there - I don't THINK that the entry physical would catch it, but if it popped up later they could medical you out....Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. SkydivingNurse 0 #52 April 2, 2005 I wish I could say that I initially enlisted for some great, meaningful, patriotic reason. I joined to get the hell out of my town. People from my neck of the woods are strange, if they're born here, they tend to die here. Nobody goes anywhere or does anything. So went to the recruiters to see what they could offer. I can't remember my score, but I only missed two questions on the ASVAB. The Marine Corps recruiter (I talked to them first) was almost salivating over me, told me I could pick whatever job I wanted. Army and Air Force basically did too. The Navy said I could take another test to see if I could go nuke. I did, and I could. So I thought about it for all of two or three seconds and signed up. This is all after the heartbreak of being told I couldn't be a pilot because of my damn glasses. I wanted nothing more out of life than to be an A-10 pilot. Seventeen years old. Maybe three weeks of talking things over with my family. Best decision I ever made. Not the part about signing up for the nuclear power program, but joining was the best thing I ever did for myself. I really miss those days.
skycop 0 #53 April 2, 2005 I joined the USAF when I was 17 and still in high school. After several months of delayed entry I went to basic training. I did four years of active duty and traveled the world. I was out for a year and then went into the active reserve and continued to travel. I'm going to be 40 this year and have no regrets. I enjoy military life and would recommend it as a viable career choice. I've been called to active duty three times in the last 6 years, again with no regrets. At this point in history I have no desire to retire, the military needs experienced old guys like me. Oh yea, ...........they were gonna let me blow shit up!!!
