Does Stress cause...

Recommended Posts

...Really violent nightmares? I have not had nightmares since junior high, but now I've been having really bad ones, at 28 y.o..... WTF? I'm usually the one who laughs at horror movies and is intrigued by stuff that freaks most out (autopsy footage, war videos, etc) But these dreams have me waking up and having to calm myself.

Anyone else have some real bad nightmares pop up out of nowhere? Is job stress a potential cause?

You're not taking any cold medicine or sleeping aids are you?

Only when I'm taking something do I get very vivid dreams and then it depends on my stress level. For instance, if I'm VERY stressed and then taking a sleep aid to help me sleep, I get very very intense dreams and they're usually fairly violent (bad violent).

Absolutely. I have always had a bit of a problem with nightmares. I notice that they are particularly bad if I am in a stressful environment or if I am dealing with alot of changes very quickly.

I'm not a doctor, or a sleep analyst, but i would say yes. I've had some preety wicked dreams (not that woke me up) and they usually seem to happen when I had a real bad day at work , or if I'm having major problems with my family. Stress affects your normal everyday life- I would definitley believe that it affects your subconcious while you're sleeping.
Just an idea, try turning on some music (that you find real relaxing) before you go to bed. Let that put you to sleep- try not to go to bed all freaked and stressed out. Anyway, if it's work related, does it really matter? :)And smile- it makes you feel better. Hope I helped a little.

A couple of times a year, I'll get really intense nightmares. It's not usually when I'm stressed, though. Whatever is causing me stress is what I usually dream about in that kind of situation. My nightmares are random.

yes. in fact, i've gone through really bad periods of insomnia too, due to stress with work, relationships, etc. there are lots of things that you can do to try to relax your mind and body before you sleep. everything from yoga, to special teas, etc. but yeah, it's totally normal.

I read somewhere that while we sleep/dream we either work out a problem in our lives (something troubling at work or with the SO or family) fix it in the dream and move on (awaking with a way to resolve the issue), or don't and continually have repeated dreams (different subjects, but same underlying subconscious problem), the trick is to figure out what in your day to day life is causing trouble and find a way during day hours to resolve it so it won't cause you grief when your supposed to be resting! Good luck!

Well, it would seem that I am not losing my mind after all..

Hey now! We never agreed to agree to that! We simply stated you can have odd dreams if you're stressed...now to the condition and location of your mind, that's yet to be determined.:D

I took a Stress Management class in college and I learned that Stress Causes something like 80% of all diseases and illness. You really can "Make yourself sick." The mind has crazy suggestive powers. I would assume that it could effect your dreams as well.
