cbain 0 #1 April 6, 2005 A while back I posted that my work was doing a write up on me about skydiving for the company newsletter. Well, it's out! Everyone has been coming by my desk all day to ask questions. Buried 0 #2 April 6, 2005 Here's the txt QuoteChristina Bain always wanted to fall through the sky. When she finally got her chance and jumped from an airplane two years ago, she knew she was hooked on skydiving. The skydiving bug bit hard: in the next six months, she jumped 300 times, sometimes four or five times a day. “The most I’ve ever jumped was 10 times in one day,” says the materials engineer at Michoud Operations. “I’m already on my second set of gear.” That’s a lot of parachute folding. On this topic, Bain turns very serious. Her parachute is always locked away unless it’s in her hand. “I can’t afford to take a chance,” she explains. “That’s my life. Most injuries or fatalities are due to bad judgment. Skydiving is a calculated risk, but I mitigate it. The enjoyment of the sport outweighs the remaining risk.” Jumping from 10,000 to 14,000 feet depending on the aircraft, she screams toward the ground at 120 mph wearing two altimeters, one audible that sounds off at certain altitudes. Even with 416 jumps, Bain considers herself an infant in the sport. “You really don’t begin to learn until you’ve got 500 to a thousand jumps under your belt.” Bain says her fondest experience in the thin air was when she got married six months ago. “My husband is a skydiver, too, so it was a natural choice for us. We exchanged vows on the ride up and then jumped out together. Our families watched from the ground.” Bain thinks everyone should try skydiving at least once. “It costs about $180 to jump tandem, strapped to your instructor under one canopy. You’re just along for the ride. It’s stress relief for me. You’re not worried about bills or that work project; you’re totally in the moment.” And she points out that if former president George Bush can do it at age 80, anyone can. Anyone anywhere can go to the company website and find this newsletter if they tried. So, I'm not posting anything that isn't already public. Thanks for the heads up.
