pilotdave 0 #1 February 16, 2009 Anyone know anything about the Pioneer Phoenix reserve? I'm borrowing (or more like storing) a rig equipped with one. The owner told me it's a square... as in... square, not rectangular. I've never heard of it before, and I'm just wondering if there's any special reason why it'd be totally unsafe to jump. I'm not worried about condition... it was packed by a master rigger only a couple months ago. Just curious if all the rest of them have been destroyed for a good reason or something. pchapman 279 #2 February 17, 2009 I can't really answer your question but I looked up what little is in Poynter as I had never heard of the canopy: 5 cell, 190 ft sq., F-111 fabric, 400 lb lines, bag deployed, hole cut in slider. TSO'd in the Low Speed category. Weight 7 lbs. Introduced April 1981. [Edit - found more:] Pioneer once had a service bulletin covering what seems like all of their main and reserve canopies. Some of the dacron lines they used had resin that made them a bit too sticky and stiff, so all the canopies had to be inspected. Basically if the lines seemed OK, they were OK, if they were too sticky, one could wash and talcum powder the lines & return the canopy to service. Plug: This bulletin popped up in the Canadian (CSPA) Technical Bulletin list, an online copy & index of which is made available through Skydive Kamloops. http://skydivekamloops.org/rigging/tb/TB27.pdf
riggerrob 643 #3 February 18, 2009 I have packed a few Phoenix reserves, but it was a while ago. They are low aspect-ratio 5-cells that compete directly with 5-cell Swift reserves. Low aspect-ratio means that they are almost square, like Parachutes de France S.O.S. Pioneer quit sewing civilian canopies in 1984. If you can pick it up cheap ... GREAT! Just review PLF procedures before jumping, because it will not flare half as well as modern reserves. Tee! Hee!
pilotdave 0 #4 February 18, 2009 Thanks for the info guys. Any idea if it'd have a bridle attachment point? Might be fun to try as a main. The container is a Strong MiniHawk. I might buy it just because it's so cute. Dave
tbrown 26 #5 February 20, 2009 QuoteThanks for the info guys. Any idea if it'd have a bridle attachment point? Might be fun to try as a main. It just might have an attachment point. I recall the advertising said it could be either freebag OR diaper packed (like most round reserves were in those days). If this canopy was made with a diaper option, there should be an attachment point for a p/c. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
