discalimer: ** not sure if this is bonfire **

my buddy flies for major airline has been thinking about getting into the sport so he bought some videos online - asked me the other day how slow would a bigway be if everyone wore wingsuits

-i didn't know what to t tell him :S

like birdman wingsuits or camera suits?

I think they'd still fall in the 100's. In the 70/80's the vintage RW suits were just big baggy balloon suits. I wear one to shoot video with (find it works better with my size/build than my actual camera suit) and I fall at about 110 with the tandem or slower

I'm going to assume Birdman...

The thing with Birdman suits, you couldn't do a bigway in the same sense of the word for RW and FF formations. You figure BM folks are getting down pretty slow, some below 40mph vertical then you could figure it would be somewhere around there.

A camera suit bigway would be fun to watch organized...it would be one HUGE fight over who got to pull in place.:D

It would have to be someone like Brits with a big ass C wing.:D:D

a little off topic but any ways, in theory you can build a formation large enough that no one has to pull, but in doing so everyone but one person (me) is gonna die, I don't care I will be pulling;)

who's theory??
that goes against physics. things fall... big things fall faster.
wouldn't a formation be considered a big thing? maybe i read it wrong... ?
heidi
edit: i DID read it wrong. i didn't see the "gonna die part" ... yeah, pull:)
i didn't lose my mind, i sold it on ebay. .:need a container to fit 5'4", 110 lb. cypres ready & able to fit a 170 main (or slightly smaller):.[/ce

Heidi,

Big things also have more drag, and therefore don't always fall faster :P

A larger formation will fall slower then a smaller one, this is something you also have to take in to acount on how you load a plane as a bigger group will have more drag and be affected by the winds aloft and drift

Picture a big net...the bigger the net, the more it "floats".

You know, with this theory...I'd think if you built a formation large enough, you could launch it straight up from the ground ;)

Errr...not quite. A more massive thing with the same surface area as a less massive thing would fall faster. A larger thing (like a big formation) might have a greater surface area/ to mass ratio.

When 2 jumpers dock, their drag is greater than the drag their individual bodies create. The formation the dock in also plays a part in this.

Don't birdman suits fly forward? I didn't think you could fall straight down in one of 'em...:S I guess you could do a bigway with enough of them, but they'd all have to be flying forwards, wouldn't they?! :S They'd be like a big 'Red Rover' line in the sky...

I have heard this, and apparently someone has done the maths that a XXXX formation would fall slow enough to enable this..........

of course physics will also tell you that a bumble bee cant fly, so calculations and theory are not always the best thing to rely on and certainly not when dealing with human beings................ Not sure I would put my trust in XXXX other people to hold it down to the deck..............

That's kinda what I was thinking. I don't fly a wingsuit, but it seems like you couldn't make a round, because the entire formation would be flying in one direction horizontally.
I guess wingys will have to settle for flocking dives. Atmonauti at best.

If you bend your legs, put your knees together, and pull in your elbow's, you can fall vertically in a wingsuit. (Of course if you do that, there isn't much point in wearing a wingsuit, is there?) I flew mine in that configuration face-to-face with a guy briefly until he turned 180 to get on heading and began tracking. He was a tall thin guy, (TJ McGinley), and the objective was to do a flock with me in the wingsuit and him in an RW suit.

BTW Riddler; I haven't had any updates from your adventure lately. Nest egg still OK?

Hi Lou,
Lots of theories abound. Back in the late 70's/ early 80's, the "wing wars" were at its peak so to speak. Everyone doing big ways were wearing monster suits with big wings and falling as slow as they could because nobody wanted to "go low!!!" Only trouble was that a regular size person ( a guy in the 140-180 lb. range) was getting such a burble and buffeting from all that wing that it was getting un practical!! Meanwhile, back in the 4 and 8 way stuff, people were getting faster tight suits for better manuverability. The tradeoff started. Big suits were fun! You could fall real slow but bobble around the sky like a cork in a hurricane!! But, back to your question?? How slow can you go?? Look at the video of the 64 way at Perris back in '81!! Big suits all over the place!! (I'm #8 out of the orange Julius {orange DC-3} in the line up) it was a good time and we were falling fairly slo but, I really wouldn't want to try to land the thing sans parachute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got that!!!!!!!!!!????
With these new fangled ditters you might be able to figgure out some of these fall speeds, you just have to get the ditters and set up a test program. Keep us posted.

Kinda the same concept as dropping a single sheet of plywood on a flat piece of concrete. you'll notice it doesn't hit the ground very hard. This is because the air underneath the plywood can only get out of the way so fast. Some air is trapped, becomes compressed, and slows the wood down before it impacts.

Sometihng tells me even if you could build a formation this big, and keep it tight enough to prevent air from escaping other than around the edges, the air rushing out from underneath it would deform the formation (think: giant taco) and the entire next issue of parachutist would be incident reports.
