LaDonna 0 #1 April 10, 2005 I was jumping March 28th and had several really bad landings. I just can't seem to figure out when to flare, I am either to early and to late. Somehow I ended up on my backside on 2 of the landings. The second one was really hard and I was in excrutiating pain after that landing. I went to the doctors to see if I broke my tailbone or what, because the pain was so bad. The Physicians Assistant that I saw said that I just had a bruised tailbone, that he did not see any breaks on the x-ray and sent me home and told me to take ibuprofen. Well on Thursday the 7th, I get a call from 3 different doctors to tell me that I had fractured my spine. That I need to stay out of the sky and not do anything streneous for the next 6 weeks. I am glad that they called me on Thursday, because I took Friday off and planned on getting enough jumps in this weekend to get my A license. That was my plan for my birthday weekend. Now I am grounded for 6 weeks. I really have to figure out when is the right time to flare, so today I went and talked to the Canopy Piloting School about working with me as soon as I can get back in the air. I am lucky that it is a small fracture and as long as I take it easy won't affect the spinal cord. FGF#

boinky 0 #5 April 10, 2005 So sorry to hear about your injury. PLEASE take your time to get completely healed. You don't want to take a chance, have another "iffy" landing and do permanent damage. 6 weeks without jumping is a hell of a lot better than a lifetime of never being able to jump again. Be safe! Let us know when you go back and how things go! Nina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts? JohnMitchell 16 #6 April 10, 2005 Ouch! I've seen that type of injury before, and most everyone recovers 100%, so keep the faith. Before you start jumping again, get some more PLF training from an instructor. Everyone has the occasional hard landing in this sport. Those who do a good PLF are much less likely to get injured. Also check the size of canopy you are jumping. It's size in square feet should be at least 10% greater than your weight, in pounds, with gear on. Also talk to an instructor about your landing flare. If you think your flare timing is way off, consider going back on the radio, or at least having some one video your landings and debrief you afterwards. Good luck. heidihagen 0 #7 April 10, 2005 oh ladonna, i hate to hear that... what a painful, uncomfortable injury when i landed hard (i told you about it when i was there)-he felt for breaks & didn't feel anything.. and i didn't want xrays (the wait.. ugh!) it took the pain about a week to go away if sitting is unbearable, get one of those semicircle neck pillows people use on planes! sleeping with a heating pad also helped for some reason. i don't have a lot of experience with injuries but hard landings are awful. it's so hard to get comfortable. heal well and feel better fast.i didn't lose my mind, i sold it on ebay. .:need a container to fit 5'4", 110 lb. cypres ready & able to fit a 170 main (or slightly smaller):.[/ce

Daizey 0 #11 April 10, 2005 Ouch! That's painful. I had nearly the exact same thing happen to me. Landed on my but, with no flare It hurt!! Definitely take the time to let it heal! I didn't and i dealt with the pain for about 9+ months. Instead of resting I carried on with my normal routines. I kept jumping (though not a lot) continued with work (which involved standing and lifting heavy things all day) and continued with other sports. Not the smartest idea! It was until this past december that I finally had time to relax and I couldn't believe the difference! Now I feel almost no pain, but i wish i had taken the time back in May to let it heal instead of letting it linger. *daizey*

gremlin 0 #13 April 10, 2005 Have been there and fractured my back. Do take your time to make sure it is fully healed. DON'T rush into things. DON'T worry about it - it will recover - mine took about 4 months - but it depends on the injury. DO use it as a chance to save up jump money I'm drunk, you're drunk, lets go back to mine....
