Our Very Own Hero

Recommended Posts

Well I don't know how many of you were in Eloy for the 2nd annual holiday boogie, but if you were you may remember the Skymonkey One First Responders. Well one of them proved again that when someone is in need he will be there to aid.

Yesterday at the airport Derek works at a plane pancaked in and exploded with a huge fireball. He hauled ass out to the crash site and was the first on scene. He assumed the guy was dead until he saw him crawling out of the wreckage, immediately started heading into the fire to help pull the guy out. Luckily the guy managed to get himself far enough out that the worst that happened to Derek was some singed arm hair. Some point after Derek had him laid down and was aiding him the fire department and paramedics arrived. He assisted the paramedics and helped load the pilot on to life flight. He actually did a lot more but this is all I feel comfortable relaying.

Baby I’m so proud of you, you never cease to amaze me.

Fiery landing injures pilot
Man, 78, crawls from burning wreckage of plane crash in Jeffco

By Brian D. Crecente And Gabrielle Johnston, Rocky Mountain News
April 8, 2005

A 78-year-old man crawled from the burning wreckage of his single-engine plane Thursday after it crashed on a Jefferson County Airport runway.

The man, whose injuries included second-degree burns, was in stable condition at University Hospital, said Wendy Krajewski, a spokeswoman for North Metro Fire Rescue. He was the only person aboard the plane. The man's name was not released.

The plane was cleared by the tower for landing and was coming in when it hit the ground between two runways, said Aaron Sauer, an air safety investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board.

The pilot managed to crawl through wreckage and flames and was sitting next to the Piper Lance when firefighters arrived, Krajewski said.

Although his injuries were serious, the man was talking with paramedics, she said.

"He was severely injured, and he had to be choppered out," Krajewski added.

Several customers were sitting on the balcony of the airport's Runway Grill when the plane went down about 12:30 p.m.

Drew Lent was waiting on tables when he heard the crash. When he and the others looked up, Lent said, there was "a huge ball of fire. Instantaneously, it was just fire and smoke."

Inspectors didn't know Thursday what may have caused the crash. There were no other planes in the area at the time and no distress call from the pilot, Sauer said.

He said the blackened remains of the plane, which was owned by the Ten Hi Flyer club in Lakewood, and debris found near the crash would be taken to Greeley for inspection.

"The main landing gear tire had separated and was next to the plane," Sauer said. "There were some small fragments scattered along the runway."

No problem, Hooknswoop is being totally shy about this. He probably wouldn't have even told me if we hadn't seen him on the news last night. :)

So when the firefighters ran up and asked him if they could help, did he shout "No!" and then look at them and say "Yes! Please." Like he did that time at Eloy? (Substitute Amy for the firefighters, but you had to be there.)

Derek, you're my hero. There has never been any doubt in my mind that you are that type of person and I love you for it. I'm glad you and the guy are both ok.

Hugs

I really miss you guys.

Nice Derek. I look forward to hearing the full story. :)

Kelli, you know I am kidding. I love to hear Derek's stories. He's got some good ones.

When I heard about the crash being at the airport that Derek works at, I wondered if he could add to the story. I had no idea it would be this detailed.

Are we still on for dinner Aug 15 with JohnnyD?

Fantastic Derek!
When one suffers trauma, the first responder has a very powerful effect on the outcome.
The actions of the first responder is often acute care and psychological. Often, the person experiencing extreme trauma regresses to the extent that they call for their parents or their mate. The moment a hero swoops in, cradles them and tells them everything will be okay, amazing things happen...

You're always the starter in your own life!

A japanese philosopher once said that when there is a fire, most people run away, but there are a few souls that run toward the flames. Those of us that know hook know that he's one of those souls. And I'm sure he's too modest to even read this thread, so Kelly is probably telling him what everyone is saying right now ;) Derek, I'm glad that there are people like you in the world.

Derek ran towards the fire just so he could give his guardian angel another work out. Plus he wanted a new cool story to tell at dinner;)

Of course we are on for dinner, but did you mean April 15th, cause I'd hate to have to wait till Aug to see you again.

The new joke is that his "people" and his guardian angel are sitting back chain smoking and drinking double lattes. :P

He is actually out rafting with Dave right now, but yesterday he was quite embarassed that I posted this. :)
