I've had the dubious experience of hearing a person try the pipes for the first time, and that's exactly what it sounded like!Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. ScottishJohn 25 #6 April 10, 2005 You might want to think about just getting a chanter first before going out and buying a full set of pipes. http://www.mondouno.com/chanters.htm No , I don't play the pipes but good luck to you. jtval 0 #7 April 10, 2005 QuoteActually, some bagpipe music can be beautiful... Amazing Grace definitely comes to mind. I used to work at a ritzy wedding hall. they would play the bagpipes quite often. I didn't realize how soothing they could actually be to listen to if played PROPERLY and those irish fuckers like to tip when you get them drunk. (I know the scottish are traditionally the bagpipe aficionodo's but not on long island)My photos My Videos

Snowwhite 0 #10 April 11, 2005 I used to have to be in the annual Labor Day parade here. 100 plus entries in it. One year we got behind the guys from Whiteys Ice Cream, who threw free ice cream the entire route. One year, we got behind the horses, well use your imagination. The worst year was behind bagpipes. FOUR NON STOP HOURS. My teeth hurt by the time it was all over with. When asked about our line up for the fourth year, they said the Whiteys spot was taken, would I want to be behind the horses or the bagpipes. You know what we took... No really, if you enjoy the bagpipes find a piper group in your area, don't buy a thing until you talk to some of them. They will have the best advice for you, and someone will probably be able to loan you a chanter til you can figure out which pipes you want to buy. We have a really active organization here, I know quite a few of them, if you need any contact info let me know.skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
pyke 0 #11 April 11, 2005 This will come as a surprise to most people, but yeah - I play! Been doing it off an on for about 9 years...but haven't picked them up in over 4. Just upgraded my chanter so I'm now more motivated to start playing...I love it so! I do agree with whoever mentioned it here first - get a practice chanter first. If I had to do it all over again - and if you're serious about playing - get the best chanter you can afford. I just got the McCallum practice chanter (long/plastic) and it's awesome compared to my first one. You can pay for the really expensive African Blackwood ones, but I don't feel they're any better than a long plastic one. What I feel is important is to get one that is the SAME SIZE as a real chanter...so your fingering gets trained quicker. Get a bag only when you're proficient with your timing/melodies/and breathing (not critical to be a circular breather - but if you can learn it - you're better off) From experience...the bag is HARD if you jump to it too early. I was shamed when I moved back from NZ and tried to walk into a pipe band in the US thinking I had something...I didn't! Anyway - it's a beautiful instrument...just check out any of Gordon Duncan's solo albums (he's the Olav of the bagpipe world....I personally think he's part bionic!! nobody should play that fast THAT GOOD!) Also - if you want some good music with pipes incorporated into them...Check out some of the earlier albums by the The Battlefield Band. Ian McDonald, aside from being a great guy in person, is SO talented!! Not many people can JAM Dave Matthews-esque style with the pipes! Oh - and yes, UNAmazing DISGrace is nice when played well - but once you've learned the fingering...you'll realize it's like screaming FREE BIRD when someone breaks out a guitar....it's THAT common!!! (sorry for all who are fans on here....it's just not that great of a song when you're asked to play it EVERY time you bust out the pipes!) If you have any questions....PM me...be glad to put you onto some sources...get you some good instruction books, etc. And if you master the Tualluths...you're a better man than I!!!
