skybytch 273 #1 April 14, 2005 Went to the movies last night. A local skydiver/climbing gym owner sponsors a two night showing of the Banff Mountain Film Festival at a local theatre every year. I'd never heard of the festival. It goes off every November in Banff, Alberta, Canada. They screen hundreds of films showcasing "mountain sports," give out a bunch of awards and then take the best of the festival on a tour (185 cities in North America alone). Last night we saw a short film by a 12 year old on mountain biking crashes - funny! Another short featuring snowboarding and ice climbing action figures - also very funny. Another one was a trip by two kayakers to scout white water in eastern Russia; they didn't find any white water but it was still a cool adventure. Saw some familiar faces in a film about a 66 year old guy who jumped into the cave in Mexico. But my favorite was the film about five Nepali women who wanted to be the first Sherpa women to summit Everest. One made it to the top. A great story on a number of different levels. There was free beer at intermission; after waiting for the line to go down we were too late to get any. They gave away some cool prizes (MSR stove, pair of Dunham boots, a backpack, a tandem skydive...); we won none of them. It was cool. If it's in a town near you, check it out. benforde 0 #2 April 14, 2005 I check it out every year, saw it in Santa Fe last week, the selection of films is different each time, and each location. I did not see the film on nepal, but one on a man that walks all over the globe, this time accross Australia without any help. The Santa Show did not have free beer, what a rip off! We also had a very cool urban mountain bike flick, crazy stuff.
