10 reasons it's great to be deaf

Recommended Posts

1. I can't hear you, but I probably don't want to either.

2. My communication is sound-proof.

3. I can communicate across a crowded stadium or through windows.

4. I can communicate under water.

5. My sign language can be very beautiful, even when I'm saying "you fucking shithead!"

6. I'm able to avoid boring lectures and speeches.

7. I don't have to hear all the bullshit people say.

8. I can sign "I love you" with just one hand.

9. I'm able to sit up front in a theater for the interpreter.

10. Many people want to learn my language, and the first words they want to know are the cuss words! :S:D:ph34r:

I forgot a few good reasons it's great to be deaf...

11. I don't wince or have to cover my ears in the plane on take-off, or when the Casa's running its engines on the tarmac.

12. I can talk across the aisle or from one end to the other end in an Otter, Casa or DC-3, and not have to yell.

13. I can talk in freefall too. ;)

And yes, I don't have to hear the stupid jokes. :D

I can do that too;)

When I was doing the POP's Texas State record a few years back, my slot was on the same line as David Armstrong and Charl de Villiers. ( John Woo wasn't good enough to be with us;).) It was nice to be able to chat with them in the aircraft and no one knew what we were talking about.

It is the same in most countries. There's just a few that are different. In Scuba the hand signals are the same no matter what country.

Language is not the same in most countries. Do they speak French in Spain?

Sign Language is a mode of communication that has to include more then anyone would need to communicate with when Scuba Diving. When was the last time you were Suba Diving and needed to know how to make layers on a CAD graphic job?

ASL (American Sign Language) was devloped from a French man by the name of Clerc and an American by the name of Gallaudet. Gallaudet, became interested in educating deaf children and wanting to learn all that he could about teaching methods, so he undertook a trip to Europe where he met and convinced Clerc to come to American. On the voyage from France to America, Clerc taught Gallaudet the signed language that was used at the Paris school and Gallaudet taught Clerc English. Together, they adapted this signed language to meet what they perceived to be the needs of deaf children in America. Hence the reason ASL uses different sentence structor of spoken English.

SEE (Signing Exact English) Just as the name states, it is a form of communication/instruction in which signs are used in exact english word order, with some additional signs representing conventions such as the "ing" word ending. Over the years, SEE was combined with ASL to produce a separate communication form known as Pidgin Signed English (or PSE).

I hope that gives you some insight as to why Sign Language is not universal and should not be compared to hand signals used to Suba Diving.

Ah, yes, the evil Rochester School for the Deaf... back in the old days, actually, I don't recall exactly when they stopped, but students were forced to fingerspell every word while on campus, at least. If they got caught signing words, they got their hands whacked with a ruler, hard... B|
