regulator 0 #1 January 27, 2009 I'm very close to ordering my 1st new rig. I'm getting a new container, new reserve, new cypres2 and I plan on getting a used main to make it easier to pack until I downsize. However, I was wondering...what risers work best with slinks? Type 17 or type 8? I plan on going over the order form with my rigger soon to make sure I've got it all right before I order, I just wanted a heads up before I got there to be as precise as I can. Thanks for the help Paul
likestojump 3 #2 January 27, 2009 type 17 - usually referred to as mini-risers is what most people want nowadays.
mnealtx 0 #4 January 27, 2009 I have type 8 risers and use slinks - no problems.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
dragon2 2 #5 January 27, 2009 All risers work fine with softlinks, however the result varies. Mini risers with softlinks and no bumpers means the slider will come down over the links and further down so you need to colapse the slider first then bring it down to your neck then undo your brakes. If that's something you do not want to have to do, you can buy the wider risers so the slider sits on top of those, or you have to install bumpers or those little hats so the slider can't come down over those. ciel bleu, Saskia

PD is shipping Slink caps along Slinks.
dragon2 2 #7 January 27, 2009 Not everyone orders a PD canopy, and I've seen a few newbies who had no idea the slider would come down over their steering lines by itself. just a heads-up ciel bleu, Saskia

But if you order Slinks, those little caps are in the package.
dragon2 2 #9 January 27, 2009 I have PdF softlinks and Aerodyne (I think) softlinks, neither came with any kind of bumper. Not sure about Precision. Oh well I don't want/need 'em anyway ciel bleu, Saskia

Remster 30 #11 January 27, 2009 I think a question we should be asking the OP is why do you want slinks? (its not a trick question!)Remster
airtwardo 7 #12 January 27, 2009 Quotetype 17 - usually referred to as mini-risers is what most people want nowadays. ~Most but not all...those of use that have broken 'mini-risers' tend to opt for the industrial strength type 8's...which also work just fine with 'slinks'. Type 8 webbing has a tensile strength of 4000 lb, while Type 17 has a tensile strength of just 2500 lb. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
regulator 0 #13 January 27, 2009 Because I'm ordering a used Sabre2 190 main that has around 100 jumps on it. I wanted to forego the brand new main since it would be harder to pack, and because I'd probably be downsizing to a 170 within 100-150 jumps or so. And the used 190 I am going to get has slinks. Thanks to all of you for your advice...I appreciate it.
riggerrob 643 #14 January 27, 2009 In 1993, PIA published specs on reinforcing mini risers. In 1998, the Relative Workshop published specs on how to build reinforced mini risers. Both specs add a layer of type 3 tape around the bottom ring. If your risers are older than that, they should retire. If modern mini risers break, you should: A - fire your packer and B - be thankful that your risers broke before your harness or your body.
regulator 0 #15 January 27, 2009 I weigh 150 lbs and ever if I was to start freeflying and had a premature deployment having the risers break with 2,500 lbs of force would (at least I think) would rip my butt open (if not more)
