Okay Motorcycle peeps - help a n00b out...

Recommended Posts

It's been twenty years since I was last on a bike (and damned near killed myself) and I've been thinking hard about getting one again. So last night I went to check out a Honda Rebel. Just by chance, a guy just traded one in that is exactly like what I was looking for - a 2005 with only 60 miles on it, looks just like the attached. I sat on it, can reach all the important levers and knobs, didn't feel cramped and it's a killer deal since its used (if you can call it that).

I'm just wondering if there are some questions I'm forgetting to ask? They'll finance a trailer, helmet, gloves, jacket, what ever else I need all together with the bike - one year warranty - what am I missing?

and I'll save AD a post (or half post anyway) I'm already signed up for a basic riders course. ;)

any help greatly appreciated.

Once done with the basic course take Level II...never stop learning.

My advice is not to roll all the gear into the loan....you will end up paying a crap load more for the helmet and leathers. I recommend riding boots also....they dont have to be race boots or anything crazy, but get some good quality riding specific boots not hiking boots. Next is check out www.dragginjeans.com (*pssst yo Ivan) they make kevlar style jeans that are nice style and hold up real well.

Yeah, dude no offense, but that thing will leave you with NO power when you need it. Why not at least a Shadow?

a Rebel has minimal amounts of power. At the minimum get a 500 or 550. I have a 550 I've been riding for a few years, and although I -could- use a bit more power, this will suffice. A 250 you will get bored with in a heartbeat.

If it's your first bike in a long time, why not get something a bit older that's still in good condition. You won't have to get a loan on it, you won't be worried as much about dropping it and stuff.

I got my '74 Honda CB550 with 18000 original miles for $900. If you're gonna get financed definitely get something stronger than a Rebel.

Looks like a good starter bike. You're not of a size to come even close to straining that bike.

Make sure you get a mesh jacket (and pants). In the summer time, it gets really easy to consider not wearing your leather jacket if it's really hot out. A mesh jacket will provide protection and let you avoid heat stroke too.

Is the Rebel the little 250 ?

243 cc.
top speed of 70mph and 66 mpg.

I understand your concern about taking it easy and getting back into it before moving to a bigger, more powerful motorcycle.

Personally, I rather take it easy on a bigger more powerful bike than ride a light bike like this one, for one reason.. sometimes you want your bike to be able to go 90 to get out of a situation..
If your bike only goes 70 and you're on the freeway trying to overtake someone, and that person hoses you by speeding up.. you might just endanger yourself because of upcoming traffic.
If you're able to open it up and go 80 really quick, you can pass that a%$#%hole that just hosed you.

Agreed. 500 on a cruiser isn't going to be too much for a new rider. If you have past experience, I think you'd quickly be bored with the 250.

I bought an '81 Suzuki GS650 for $1000 for my first bike. I love old bikes, although when I got it up to about 10,000rpm it sounded like it was going to explode. :S

Just my 2 cents worth.......

Something a wee bit bigger.....

If a bike is too underpowered it can be difficult to stay out of the way of all the 4 wheelers trying to kill you;)

aight then - I'm open to suggestions and am not tied to Honda. I'll be doing some more research but keep the comments coming - they're greatly appreciated.

By and large, if you buy a bike like that, you know you're not going to out-power anyone. Hopefully you'll be smart enough to take that into consideration when driving.

I haven't driven a lower-powered bike, but my brother rode a Honda 100 for a couple of years; he said he just had to adjust his expectations.

For a first bike, I'd recommend a 500-650cc naked bike. You don't want much in the way of plastic, cause when you drop it, it'll be expensive to replace.

For a first I'd even more recommend getting an old used cheap bike, which you can learn on and ride to hell, and then when you're ready for something bigger and better, get something nice and expensive.

I had a Honda CX 500 back in the 80's. Back then a 500 was mid size and 1100 was the monster. Now 750 is almost small.;) Four years ago I bought a Kawasaki Vulcan 750. I'd never had a license before :$ and was never real comfortable on the 500. Not because of power but just still learning. But the Vulcan 750, which is the smallest they make, was a pretty good choice. I aced the riding test with just a little practice. I can be stupid fast if I want to but it doesn't get away from me and I feel comfortable on the highway. Light enough to still have a center stand. I'm old enough that I don't want to go down the main drag on one wheel.

The 250 might be a good deal but not when you want to turn it around to something bigger in August.
I'm old for my age.

then get a dirt bike
don't waste money on that thing
i mean kids now days ride bigger bikes than that

Thanks for the constructive advice. I'd guess you'd have me jumping a stiletto 120 too right?

Dirtbikes are a completely different story...

A 250 street bike gets boring quickly.

A 250 dirt bike will kill you before you have a chance to realize you screwed up.
