Personally, I think this is JUST what is needed, and hopefully the bickering sides can put aside some of their differences and see that the beautiful sport of hockey transcends the elites. Conundrum 1 #2 April 13, 2005 Although I am pissed that the NHL is being lame this season, I think that only playing the playoff games to actually win the Stanely Cup is just dumb. The whole season needs to be played in order to rightfully win the Cup.
SkiD_PL8 0 #3 April 13, 2005 I think that is great! I hope it happens. Greenie in training.
masterrig 1 #4 April 13, 2005 The way things have gone, with the NHL... anything could happen. It'll be interesting to see how the NHL and Canadian courts deal with it. IMHO, Gary Bettman is the 'problem' with the NHL! Chuck
kingbunky 3 #5 April 14, 2005 i was actually (can't remember why) reading some of the history of the stanley cup, and it actually isn't an NHL trophy, the cup predates the NHL by several years and it was originally a 'challenge' type trophy. anyone could challenge the holders of the cup for the right to claim it. there have been years where two different teams have held it, and years where it wasn't challenged for. no reason why an amateur team couldn't challenge for it. lawrocket 3 #6 April 14, 2005 Lord Stanley appointed two trustees of the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, which everyone called the Stanley Cup. He outlined these conditions: 1) The winners have to return the cup when required by the trustees to be handed over to any team that may win it 2) Each winning team is to have the club name and year etched on it 3) The Cup is to remain a challenge competition and not the property of any team, regardless of how many times the team wins it 4) The trustees have absolute authority over disputes in the winner of the cup 5) Provisons for naming the substitute trustee. It wasn't until 1927 that the Cup came under the exclusive control of the NHL. Prior to that, it was a multileague championship. Also, another of Stanley's conditions was that it was to be for amateur athletes only. So, who knows what this challenge will hold. I hope they win. My wife is hotter than your wife.
