Been offered a Vector 2 container for a spare - thoughts please?!

Recommended Posts

Ok, so Ive been offered a Vector 2 from an old time jumper that he has used as his spare CReW rig.

I have searched this forum high and low and all the threads I can find are from like 2001 and 2002!

So, intended uses:

Spare rig for belly flying mainly
and doing some CReW on as Im just learning this awesome disciplne.

I have read about some modifications needed to be done by a rigger to make it freefly friendly.... Im not keen on modifying rigs as its essentially untested compared to the OEM design - thoughts?

Also, this rig has loads of great reviews and has sold of 40,000 iirc from when I looked it up (could be wrong)

Is it still considered a 'safe' rig and would YOU fly with it?!!!

Basically, I could either buy this now as its cheap and I know the seller well.

OR// wait an unknown amount of time till something else more expensive comes up. (Im trying to avoid expense at the moment!)

Opinions appreciated - especially from the Riggers out there ;)

Not a rigger but I loved my vector II. Not really a freefly rig but for a belly rig or crw it would be great.
If it is a ROL setup modifying it to a BOC would be no problem for a rigger and just as good as factory. I'd jump a vector II anyday. Check the velcro riser covers if worn just have it replaced and jump the hell out of it.
ATTACK LIFE ! IT'S GOING TO KILL YOU ANYWAY!!!!

If it's cheap, you need a belly rig and fits you and your canopies, why not? CRW can be done with most rigs, actually newer isn't always better for CRW (f.i. secondary risercovers aren't used). I would ask a rigger to put a CRW flap on any rig that doesn't have a tuck-away reserve flap (like vector 2), whether you do CRW or not that's a great little mod that improves safety.
CRW canopies tend to pack up big (a ZP Lightning packs up about 2 sizes bigger than say a Sabre) so make sure the rig fits the sizes you need for both freefall and CRW if you want to use it for both.

My second and third rigs are Vector II's. What I don't like about mine are the harnesses aren't very comfortable. But I've had at least one since 1987. Usually two or three. My primary rig until 1997. Don't freefly it but belly and CRW are fine. As above add CRW flap on reserve.

Only issue is RWS factory RSL. I don't like it and have Ray Farrel (Action Air) RSL's on mine. Not a reason not to buy it but many/most Vector II's don't have an RSL because Booth didn't believe in them. They were never standard on the Vector II. Or III I believe.

If it doesn't have one and you want one an RWS version could be added but needs a new ripcord, ripcord housing, RSL lanyard and some sewing. Or you can send it to Action Air for a 'ring around the cable' RSL, FAA approved but not appoved by RWS/UPT.

I think if the prospect of a master rigger doing the mods properly concerns you then maybe you could just give Pablo or Greg a call at the UPT loft. At worse they will say no. I'll say one thing for sure they made me a kickass set of dive loops in about 3 minutes flat.
