adventure getaway

Recommended Posts

I feel the need to schedule an adventure or get away.
Maybe a trip to an exotic place or an adventure hike/ river/ sports or something.
I need to get away and recharge the batteries.
Does anyone have any suggestions? :)Past experiences and trips to places that
profoundly affected them as a result?

All advice from everyone appreciated.
(No humor or snide remarks will be dealt out this time,
I promise. [:/])

The grand canyon. Sign up for one of those packages that takes you down toward the bottom.

Whitewater rafting trips in Colorado - had a friend do this and love it.

Appalachian trail hikes - had a coworker walk the whole thing one summer.

I'm about to do five days rafting on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. My friend who is going with me has done it before and she says it's an amazing combination of rafting, hiking, hot springs, cool people, great guides, and awesome food. I expect that five days of completely unplugging from civiliation will profoundly impact me, but I won't be able to confirm that till I get back in early June.

Here's the company I'm going with: www.hughesriver.com Of course, I don't know if going alone but being on a trip with other people is exactly what you were looking for.

Edit to add: awesome that you're just up and going on an adventure by yourself. When I signed up for this trip, I had no clue whether any of my friends were actually going to come along, and I really didn't care. I'm glad my friend will be there but was perfectly happy to just go off on my own adventure. Sometimes, those trips are the coolest! And actually, in the few weeks before the rafting trip I'll be off on a road trip adventure all by myself. Can't wait!

I edited to take out 'alone' because you're right, a trip might be with other people on adventure or hikes, I just meant it would be separate from my current situation of family and friends. :)

A couple of years ago, May 2003, I went on a little 10 day adventure. I went by road-trip by myself, leaving from Houston, TX.

First I went to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. There I went to the main caves and then went back-packing in some of the country side for the night. The next morning I did a little more spelunking then hit the road again.

Next I went to the Grand Canyon. There I hiked down to the bottom on one of the steeper trails. I packed over 5 liters of water, and wished I'd brought more. I spent the night in the bunkhouse at the bottom (call ahead as it fills up way in advance but I got lucky that they had a cancelation that day). The next morning I hiked back up to the top on the longer but less steep trail. If you've never seen the Grand Canyon it's an amazing experience.

Following that I drove to Moab and spent the night in a nice little Hostel there. Also, went to Arches National Park while there. The next day I went on a 5 day white water rafting trip through Cateract canyon. It was unbelievable. I can't remember the name of the outfit I went with right now but they did an awesome job. May is also normally the best time to go white water rafting as the snow is melting and water will be high. Although the year I went snow was low and the water never did get to really high levels, this year should be awesome though.

At the end of the white water rafting the outfitter had a little Cessna ride set-up for us to get back to Moab. Then I drove back home.

That may be a little more than you were thinking of but I treasure my memories from that trip deeply. It was also a time of great soul searching for me and the time alone in the outdoors was perfect. If you want any more details just PM me.

Christina

Do a search on Yelapa, Mexico. I haven't been there (yet) but I have a friend who goes there once a year to get away from everything... and from his pictures and stories about the place, it sounds like a great place to "recharge the batteries".

I agree with eeneR that Tahoe is a great place to plan a trip. I live here and it is very hard for me to take trips/vacations because everything I want to do is right here. I love this place. Im at work right now so when I get home home I send you some pictures of the area.

some skydiver friends and i are climbing mt adams in washington state around the 14th or 15th of june. all skydivers are welcome to meet us up there. the climb can be done in a day, but since most people will be comming from sea level, we are going to split it up into several days. no special equipment will be needed aside from overnight backpacking equipment. we will spend the first night at the trail head at 5600'. the next day we will make our way up to about 9000' and once again set up camp. day 3 will be summit day. since we will be spending that night at 9000' again, people can take their time and either get an early start or sleep in a little. the last day we will return to the trail head. the reason for such a slow ascent is that i think it will make the trip much more enjoyable for those of us who spend most of out time at sea level.

I absoloutely second both of those! The most amazing experience of my life was a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. It was 18 days and 225 miles of the most amazing place I have ever been. It definatly changed me.

Like NWFlyer said, the Middle Fork of the Salmon is an amazing river too!!

If you can't get the 18 days to run the grand, come to Colorado and go rafting! It's been a great snow year here, and the rivers should be high all summer!! Drop me a PM if you want more info....I guided for 6 years and I can give you the scoup on where to go and when.

Costa Rica has a cool EcoTour which includes whitewater river rafting, hiking, biking, and canopy tour (ziplines).

Costa Rica is amazing. I did a backpacking trip several years through Corcovado NP...through primary rainforest to a black sand beach.

Rincon de la Vieja NP is another great place in Costa...it is essentially a mini Yellowstone with active guysers, hot springs, and and an active volcano all set in a rainforest.

Amazing suggestions everyone. Thank you. I am making a list to accomplish. I will do one soon and keep the rest. This is something I should be doing more of. :)
