What would you do?

And what happens when someone renting the rig gets it caught on the fense in a high wind day. Who is responsible for the repair?

Standard gear-borrowing rules...if you lose it or break it, you buy it. In this case, if something bad happened, I'd expect either the renter or the DZO (if the renter is a student) to pay for repair or replacement or refund the purchase price.

tell the DZO thats loaning you the money that u will pay them an extra 5-9% I'm sure they would be willing to work out that difference...
***

I would agree with this completely......... buuuut :S the seller should have hammered this out prior to "selling" the canopy, not just decided to place it into a student/rental rig just because its handy.

I agree that when you purchase on credit you get charged a percentage, and dont have a problem with it (check my monthly bills...):P

this is kinda like a finance company that has the teeny tiny faint lettering on their "fine print". that stipulates that if you fart while facing west on a full moon while the president of the US is giving his inaugeral speach.... they reserve the right to bend ya over and make ya squeal like a pig.....:P:o --->> (thats the beer speaking);)-->and I need another one!!!

Someone once said that "verbal agreements aren't worth the paper their written on". ;)

No matter what the deal, it is always a good idea to write it down so that there is no misunderstanding.

It sounds like you are unhappy with what is going on. Maybe you should discuss it with the other party and figure it out.

I purchased my icarus from Ralph with the same understanding as Chrissy has.....if he would have lent it out to other while I was paying for it I would have told him to shove it and give me my money back...... its kinda like leasing a car, you aint buying it, but no one else gets to drive it while you lease....

I bought Bill a main once. We both understood that I could jump it anytime I wanted until he paid me back (which, fortunately, was very quickly).

The car leasing analogy isn't exactly accurate because in that situation, the person/company leasing out the vehicle includes profits in the monthly payments they require.

there is the core of my argument right there......

you both had an agreement that was clearly understood.

unless my facts are off, Chrissy had an agreement that got "altered" after the fact.

well plane and simple it comes down to this:

Dont expect a company whether it be a large bank or a DZO, to lend you money and not expect that payment plus some back. It is up to you to iron out those details, whether it be them renting out ur gear, them charging u 9%, whatever. If u dont iron that out urself, I have no problem with the DZO to decide how they are going to make that interest up. It's not screwing the soon to be owner. there is absolutly no difference in tacking on more charge or taking away some of the value. No business is going to hand out money for free, and u shouldnt expect it.

This should be a lesson to all people that work out a similar deal with thier DZO (and I know there are a lot of them) Expect that the DZO is going to make a profit. If you dont want them to loan out ur gear for that profit, discuss with them another way of making that payment. I.e. out of ur pocket. If you have a problem with paying more for a canopy then it is worth, then save up ur money and buy it outright...

my entire argument is centered upon the fact that the agreement never stipulated that the canopy would be used as a student/rental .......

this should have been stated prior to making the first payment.

thank god banks cant add in shit after you start buying your car.....

After receiving all of this wonderful imput I am left better appreciating the situation I have here. Being a relative newbie to the sport I didnt understand how these kind of arangments work. I cant believe my thread made it this far with only minor hijacking. You guys ROCK!!!!!!

The fact is that I got a good canopy at a good price and this thread has helped me see that I have a great deal. :)
Thanks guys

Lets say that you bought a main from your DZ owner and he allows you to put it on your account and pay it off weekly. The only thing left that you need is a reserve and you can jump your own gear.

Then he puts the main that you are paying off into a student rig to let other people jump whenever they want to rent gear. (usualy students)

How would you feel about this situation and if you feel it is wrong then how would you handle it?

My opinion is that if you are essentially paying for the rig on "layaway," the DZO should NOT be allowing others to use it and put it at risk. If you get 80% of it paid off, and then some student goes and cuts it away and loses it, is he prepared to refund all of your money?

If between now and you finishing paying it off, one, two, three hundred jumps get put on this main, will he be dropping the price down to reflect the additional use?

I'm sorry, I don't know how you should handle it, but these are definitely questions you should get answered one way or another. Good luck.
