What would you do?

Recommended Posts

Lets say that you bought a main from your DZ owner and he allows you to put it on your account and pay it off weekly. The only thing left that you need is a reserve and you can jump your own gear.

Then he puts the main that you are paying off into a student rig to let other people jump whenever they want to rent gear. (usualy students)

How would you feel about this situation and if you feel it is wrong then how would you handle it?

all depends on your deal with the dzo.. if you "bought" it.. then it shouldn't be in a rental rig....... but then again, it cold get you a cheaper main... justtell him to take off 5 bucks every time it is used (normal depriciation on a main is 1 dollar for every jump)

DZO loans jumper money for main so they won't have to rent.
Jumper lets DZO rent main out to others while loan is outstanding.

Seems kinda fair to me, provided the main is always available to the jumper. ;)

I'd add that the price paid reflects the value of the canopy. Paying full price for a brand new canopy that will have 300 jumps on it by the time it is officially yours is, IMO, a pretty bad investment...

What is the status of the main (new, used, how many jumps...)? How much are you paying for it?

I purchased my icarus from Ralph with the same understanding as Chrissy has.....if he would have lent it out to other while I was paying for it I would have told him to shove it and give me my money back...... its kinda like leasing a car, you aint buying it, but no one else gets to drive it while you lease....

If u are borrowing money, u pay back that loan, plus interest. If u buy a car at a Buy here pay here lot, u pay more for the car because they are taking a risk. The DZO is loaning that jumper money, and for them to expect the loan to be repayed plus interest is perfectly acceptable. That is their way of collecting the money. Technically the DZO own's the canopy until u pay them for it, so if it gets ruined its their problem, they lose the money on it. They are taking the risk of u saying "i cant pay for it" and they cant send it back to PD, Aerodyne etc. and say well they decided they didnt want it. Anytime ur financing anything expect that the financing company expects a return on its investment.

After reading that it sounds like I was being mean, I wasnt I swear just my opinion on the matter :)

the sticky point here is that no one else gets to drive your car do they?

to use your analogy, its technically the car lots car untill you pay it off.... how would you like to purchase a car and then have the car lot owner send their friends over to drive it?

if it gets ruined its their problem***
it they are honorable, I agree

The problem here is that at no time was she informed that it would be used while she was purchasing it (other than by herself) since everyone has pretty much standardised a one doller devaluation per jump - she should be entitled to at least this much.

I am not trying to be antagonistic here, but to me, once you start paying for a canopy, and are making regular payments without skipping payments, that canopy for all intents and purposes is yours...... and should be treated as if its yours, the dz can easily stipulate that it doesnt leave their dropzone untill paid off.

well, its technically the loan companys car until u pay it off, and u are right in my example that is the car lot. But if she fails to make payment. that company will take it back and resell it to someone else. Now if u wanna say that no one should jump it, I would agree with ur argument, but in that case the DZO would prob just charge an interest or financiing fee. That is all hey are doing here. They are selling u a canopy, on the basis of payment, but instead of charging you directly for the interest they are charging those that are renting gear. Sure it devalues the canopy u are buying, but it would be no different to them saying u are paying $1600 for a $1300 canopy, or ur paying $1300 and we are going to devalue it by $300. If you want no one to jump it, tell the DZO thats loaning you the money that u will pay them an extra 5-9% I'm sure they would be willing to work out that difference...:)
