KMonster 0 #1 May 5, 2005 Our first adventure race was last night! Thanks for your input on naming our team, we went with Raw Feat and we're really happy with it. This adventure race was just a sprint, but it was so much fun. We checked in and they gave us a course map to study which was a topo map with 21 check points on it. We started off running through some beautiful trails on a big hill and ended up winding our way down to the beach. We ran along the beach which was tough with the soft sand in parts and slippery sea weed and big rock fields (and the people on the beach wondering why the heck a strung out line of people with packs on were all running around). We hit the checkpoint at the end of our beach run and started back, it was encouraging to see the amount of people we were ahead of was greater than the amount ahead of us. When we got back to where the beach leg started, there was a manned check point and a surprise task of building a sand-castle 16" high. It was fun and a nice (quick) little rest. They told us where to find the secret location of check point 15 which was left off the map and we took off. The whole running portion was 8 miles. We transitioned to bikes and took to the streets for this urban navigation part of the race for another ten miles. We chugged up some nasty hills on our mountain bikes and screamed down some fun ones too. It was really cool to see other teams go zooming around because all you could see was a pack of bike lights. (The race didn't start until 7pm so it was getting dark by the time we even got on bikes). Aside from getting lost once, and passing one of the check points which made us have to backtrack a few hundred meters, it went pretty smoothly. Chad did an awesome job getting us back on course. We are exhausted today from putting out so hard last night and getting in so late, but it was soooo fun. At any point, we would look at eachother and smile we were having such a good time. There was a guy taking video when we were running in to the check point to make the sandcastle. I'll post a link if he puts it up on the website. CanuckInUSA 0 #2 May 5, 2005 Nice work Katie. Hey did you ever meet Winnie Chang from the UK? She's a fellow BASE jumper. But the reason why I bring her up is that she too has been into these Adventure Races. But I haven't spoken with her in a while, so who knows what she's been up to. You going to be in Twin over Memorial Day? I still need a few small video clips to finish a project of mine. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
KMonster 0 #3 May 5, 2005 Hey Canuck, Chad and I won't make it to Twin this year for Memorial Day, but we'll be there Labor Day and some time in between for sure. Adventure Racing is like crack. The more we train, the more we're inspired to train and this race just made us want more! Maybe we'll run into Winnie Chang in one of the bigger races. Does she ever come to the US? That would be sweet to meet another fellow BASE jumper/adventure racer!
Dagny 0 #4 May 5, 2005 That sounds awesome!!! I've always wanted to move into adventure racing and one day I will for sure. It's fun to hear your story! And how sweet that you not only completed it, but did well also? That's way cool! Good job!Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali
DexterBase 1 #5 May 5, 2005 The course was really well designed. The field was spread out enough that we weren't stepping on eachother and couldn't even see the other teams at times. Yet, if you look at the results, the time difference between 8th and 13th place (us) was only ten minutes. That's pretty impressive that the finish was so close between a lot of teams. At about mid-race, we had a pretty good lead over many of the teams that ended up finishing ahead of us. I made a couple navigational errors that cost us the ten minutes that would have really counted. We're young racers so these mistakes are to be expected; however, we're learning and we'll continue to get better and better. We train pretty hard so I imagine we'll see real improvements before our big race in September.
