Air Purifiers

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about getting one, and wondered what y'all's experiences have been.

There's one at Brookstone and one at Sharper Image and of course both say they're the best.

The Brookstone one runs $300, has permanent filters, UV germicidal lamp, and a fan, which works silently and pumps more air through the filter than non-fan silent filters. It says it's been proven the best silent purifier on the market.

The Sharper Image one is closer to $575, no fan, but all rest of the above, and is approved by the allergy and asthma folks. Plus, it's way more expensive, and you get what you pay for. Or do you?

Anyone get Consumer Reports or know anything about this topic?

Are you thinking of getting one for your home or to have in your workplace??

It's for home - it's an old place with lots of drafts, pet dander, insta-dust (you clean a surface, turn your back for two seconds, and the dust is back), not to mention allergens and microbial fuckers that I can't see.

I just think it would make my allergies and general health better to have cleaner air.

What I don't know is: is it worth the expense, and if it is, is the more expensive one THAT much better, or is the $300 one just as good or better.

I think I might get a free compact one for my office with the really expensive one.

Not a big deal, I'm just tired of sneezing.

Rebecca,

It's where you live girly! Guess you'll need to move on over to La Porte or Baytown for cleaner air......:P

kiddin.... however, I watched a show about purifiers on Primetime or 20/20, and the Sharper Image purifier came out on top.......my .02 cents...

Aha! THAT'S what I'm looking for. Did the show say anything about their effectiveness?

And yeah, Houston sucks for allergies anyway, I'm just trying to keep them outside... [:/]

General comments -- I'd avoid the ones that use HEPA filters. Got two of those and the replacement filter costs quickly made them more expensive than the others.

Also got an Oreck and have liked that so far.

I'm not interested in those with replaceable filters- I want one that has wipe-clean permanent filters.

What's the Oreck one run?

Ah, i don't remember any specifics, just that the "SI" one was the quietest of the lot and more effective in moving air..... I've thought about getting one myself, glad you started this thread.....

so some more research about the sharper image ones. Recently there have been studies that they may not be safe b/c they produce too much ozone

They say the ozone produced is way below min. gov't standards, but that people with resp. problems should ask a doc first.

I heard the same about the ozone too...but bought an ionic breeze anyway. I have bad sinus issues, and was ready to try anything. Only had it a month, and so far, I like it. I got it off ebay, for 300. It was 'suppossedly' new, and sure looks like it. Came with the mini one also. So I have no complaints.

Consumer Reports has the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze classified as "useless" and "unhealthy". Buyer beware.

That is exactly what i had "heard" about them.;) Rebecca, i am in the A/C business, i deal with air quality on a daily basis. If you want to go as inexpensive as possible, get a pleated filter for your air conditioning system. It looks like an accordian and will take care of most of the dust, pollen, pet dander, etc. in your home provided your system is sealed marginally well. They are disposable, replace them monthly. If you want to go more expensive, they make whole house media air cleaners for your a/c system and even electronic air cleaners with ultra-violet lights for your a/c system also. For the disposables, go to home depot etc. For the whole system mounted ones, call your a/c company who does your routine maint. on your system. What? You don't have routine maint done on your system?:D:o That could be part of your problem as well.;) If you need a reputable company in your area let me know.;)

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

Actually, Craichead and I have one too.

The blades do collect an awfull lot of goo, but if you think about it we really don't have any basis for comparison. Most air cleaners use filters where you can't see the goo.

I'm not convinced they're unhealthy, but I'll take Consumer Reports word for it when they say others do a better job.

I love the fact that you don't have to buy replacement filters for it. I think we'd be willing to buy more of them if they weren't so damn expensive.

We have the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze in different parts of the house. I have awful allergies and asthma and they really do work so well!

A shopping tip --Look on EBay as Sherper Image sells their open box items that people ordered and returned saying they didn't like it or just never used it at all. They have a couple levels they sell on that give either the full 5 yr warranty or a lesser timeframe if the unit was used at all. I got one as a gift before buying the next one and when it started to act up it was promptly replaced by Sharper Image!

Other sale offers include buying one at full price and getting the 2nd one at half off, directly through Sharper Image. They often also include the small wall outlet version (bathroom or small bedroom) for free.

Happy Shopping!

I bought an Oreck too - you can get a factory reconditioned one for like $175. New they're 365 or so (they're all over ebay, but they go for about the same price as new) If you find someone else interested, you can buy 1 and get one half off, split the savings. You also get free crap from oreck 'just for trying' ... the electrik broom is actually pretty handy. I'm not sure if it helps - it seems to, I've seen some pretty nasty shit go down the drain when I clean the blades.
it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

OK, I just read the ratings, and they say the Friedrich C-90A is the way to go - at $500 or so.

The rest apparently suck.

Why can't they make the good model pretty too? The Sharper Image one comes with fake wood burl or silver in a tower, but the good one is an ugly beige box.

Grr.

Thanks Brains, and the rest of you for your replies!!

OK, I'll go get a replacement AC filter today!

Liz, you've really noticed a difference? The little test result matrix on ConsumerReports showed that model did poorly. Why did you get it, and why do you think it's worked? (just wondering if the report is 'off')
