Driving across the country... advice?

Recommended Posts

Well, as many of you know, my boyfriend and I will be moving across the country, possibly in seperate cars if we go at the same time. So, while alone in my car for countless hours a day, I am wondering what I will want to do. Radio and cds are bound to get old, so I started thinking about books on cd, etc.

I have a learn to speak spanish cd set, so I might try listening to that... who knows, maybe i'll really learn spanish by the time I reach San Fran. Anyone know of any other good learn-stuff-on-cd sets?

I guess i'll probably want to get a hands-free phone thingamajig so that we can talk on our trip, but I don't drive a lexus, so my car is fairly noisy inside, too.

Thoughs, tips? We are going to take I-10 all the way, and might consider stopping for some jumps if we find a dz not too far off, too. Not moving for a couple of months, but i'm a freak so want to be ready:P

thx

I find recorded books to be great. Your brain engages in them a little more than it does with music. They're pricey, so you might look into borrowing them from the library - it would still be much cheaper to mail them back than it would to buy them in the first place.

I thought about the language thing when I had longer commutes, but I had trouble finding one that didn't also require written work along with the CD. That was a while ago, so maybe there's something out there now.

Krisanne's reading my mind again and she beat me to it.
:D

New suggestion, paddletalk! Make up a flip board with a bunch of large lettered words and stuff on it then when you pass cars with kids you can hold the signs up with stuff like: You're dad's cute! or Tell your mom to get off the phone and drive! Use a thick black pen so they can see it and only show it when the kids are looking but not the parents. Then hide it when mom or dad looks.

Get a lot of books on CD. You can get something like 3 or 4 free at the library then mail them back to return them when you get to SF.

That and the hands free thing was all I could think of.

If you're going to do that - go to Cracker barrel!

You can turn them in at the next store down the road!

Novels on CD are a good choice too. I used to drive 12 hours each way to see my girlfriend every two months or so. XM radio would have been an investment I would have loved to have made prior to a few of those drives.

Brilliant, I tell ya, this girl is brilliant. No wonder I'm trying to read her mind. There's so much genius in there!

mmm.. XM radio... I think that's what is going to save me when I travel this summer...

Books are good... besure to get something that will keep you at least a little stimulated...

Oh, and don't forget snacks... that's very important.

I'm sorry, did you just say I can return books on CD at Cracker Barrel? I'm confused.

Phree, good call. I don't have an XM capable stereo, but Rory does so maybe he'll want to hook that up in his car. Then i'll be forced to be jealous!

You can BUY audio books at cracker barrel and then turn them in at the next cracker barrel and get more! Plus a yummy meal. I got a map with all the cracker barrels in the us! You too can pick one up at your local cracker barrel. If you don't know where that is, pm me and I'll look it up for you!!!

Shoot, Mel, I didn't think about it.. but do you think we'll have a problem getting signal on our phones? I haven't driven across country before, I bet there are some blackout areas where signal is nowhere to be found.

I will definitely give you our new addy as soon as we get one. :)

It was a stressful time, but i've accepted admission at Berkeley for Fall of '05. :)

BIG HUGS!!

that's the EXACT reason we used them... it was lots of fun to use little walkie-talkies ~ you can find them really cheap at wal-mart. around $10 - $15. plus, you can save your minutes :)

I'm not sure what service you use but I know with my service I always have coverage issues when I drive long distances. Walkie talkies are a great alternative.

So you're moving to SF? SWEEEEET! That's where I live. We'll have to throw you a welcome party!

Note to self: Sell Cracker Barrel stock.

aruh? Sell?

I'm single handedly keeping them in the black.

BUY DAMMIT!!!

You're "borrowing" product from them and think you're contributing to the bottom line? Well, I guess if you're eating there every time you stop... that might be helping out.

I've never gotten the books. I just eat there.

I guess I'm just "borrowing" the food too when you think about it....:D:D:D
