AggieDave 6 #7 May 9, 2005 QuoteNobody likes a quitter. You say that, but give this sport some more time and you'll see why people quit. Friends will die in this sport, people will piss you off in this sport, the politics in this sport is fucking unreal. For me, I'm pretty much stuck in this sport, I don't see any reason why I would personally stop jumping on my own choice, but I don't know what the road will hold in 10 years or 20 years, etc. Although I know that I never want to stop jumping, ever.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." ladyskydiver 0 #8 May 9, 2005 Right now, I say yes, but I know people that for various reasons have gotten burnt out on the sport - some because they just did too much in it others because they saw too many friends go in others because life got in the way, etc. So...although I say yes, I'll qualify it with a "hopefully," but life may dictate otherwise at some point in the future. I'll just roll with life and see where it leads.Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile. I started jumping at SDC in 2000, and only 2 people from the little group of beginners i used to jump with still jumps. Funny how everyone thinks they'll never quit, but they do. Life changes, people change. I honestly have no idea what i'll be doing 2 days from now. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! RkyMtnHigh 0 #10 May 9, 2005 The last few weekends have been really tough and I was seriously considering leaving the sport. I took two weekends off. Went to Clewiston this weekend for Freddie Brown's Memorial Service with all of my gear and the open mind that I may or may not jump. Once I got there and saw the joy and positive energy within my friends, I went to manifest and said "put me on the next one". They said "5 minute call okay?"...Yes, that's plenty of time. It took a lot of courage for me to climb into the plane for the first load as I was a nervous wreck and thought "WTF am I doing?" However as I exited the plane, a huge smile came upon my face and I knew I was doing the right thing by continuing to jump. For my jumps today, the door of the plane was broken so we left it up for the entire climb to alti...I sat in the door during the entire climb admiring the beautiful view and feeling the air upon my face...and it was very clear why I do what I do. This weekend was nothing short of "Spectacular"! _________________________________________

bob.dino 1 #13 May 9, 2005 Yup. This. I doubt I'll continue jumping at the same rate as now, simply because it's too all-consuming. Maybe I'll slacken off a bit, or maybe I'll just stop jumping. We shall see.
livendive 8 #14 May 9, 2005 Your results should be pretty skewed. Most active skydivers think they'll do it forever. Most also quit after a 3-5 years. After 10 years, I *think* I'll be around for a long time to come, but that plan is probably subject to revision. If I ever quit, I hope it's because I've found something even better, and not due to something chickenshit like injuries or pressure from some future wife or whatever. I know you say this semi jokingly, but for me this sport is the kind of thing that if I'm not enjoying it, then I NEED to stop. I know myself well enough to pretty much know that this time will come. Probably not for a long while, but still. |>.<| Seriously, W.T.F. mate?
happythoughts 0 #16 May 9, 2005 I've seen people leave the sport for a variety of reasons. - marriage. The new wife wants more of a time committment instead of being second place. "Getting married? How much do you want for your gear?" - injuries. Sometimes people are too injured. Sometimes the medical bills prevent them. Sometimes they feel they've exhaused all their luck. - moving on. "Been there, done that". People can get bored with anything. - incidents involving friends. It can be too much to bear. One thing is certain, don't jump unless you really want to. There's no requirement.
MarkM 0 #17 May 9, 2005 The sport is not a healthy lifestyle in a lot of ways. It consumes a lot of time and money and it's pretty easy to get injured. It's a very easy hobby to drop out of. But there's always new blood coming in so the sport absorbs the losses pretty easily. It's kind of silly define yourself as a "lifer" for pretty much any hobby anyway. There are a lot of rides in the amusement park, if you get tired of one there's nothing wrong with moving on to different thrill.
