sangiro 26 #1 August 12, 2003 Heya all, Apologies for the server errors you've been experiencing the past few weeks. We have outgrown our current machine again. We are good on bandwidth for now but the two 1.8 GIG processors are just not carrying the load. I'll be purchasing some upgrades in the next few days and maybe add an additional machine in the near future to share the load. Hope this will fix it (at least for a while!) I've attached a graph that shows the New User Registration for this year. It's a good problem to have! Safe swoops Sangiro
Muenkel 0 #2 August 12, 2003 Hey Boss, I am computer illiterate, but does eliminating all the duplicate users help with the bandwidth? Chris _________________________________________ Chris
sangiro 26 #3 August 12, 2003 QuoteI am computer illiterate, but does eliminating all the duplicate users help with the bandwidth? Nope. This is caused by active users, meaning, people actually logged in and using the site at the same time. Just having duplicate accounts doesn't do anything. (unless you have 100 and log all of them in at the same time!) The risk in duplicate accounts is in the possibility of abuse - not in server load or bandwidth. FOr example, if I closed out the site while I was working? i am guessing that concurrent log ins are not a problem. it is concurrent accesses, i.e. everyone pulling 50 forum headers all at the same time that snaps the mflops. oh yeah, the big problem i notice lately is too many connections.. see above, not a too many user logged in problem, is a too many user pulling pages at same time problem. capisce?namaste, motherfucker. sangiro 26 #19 August 12, 2003 A registered user and a "guest" is the same to the server. No difference whether people browse logged in or not. It simply has to do with the number of people asking for pages... The number of people on Dropzone.com, registered or not, has simply grown! That's it. Clownburner 0 #21 August 12, 2003 This is probably a geek question, but have you considered (or do you currently) implement FastCGI or mod_perl for the forum scripts? It can make a _huge_ difference in the number of concurrent loads you can put through a given set of processors... But I've also just sent in a big wad of bail money, so hopefully that'll help a little. They need one of these at the front end and one of these at the back end. Cache the most frequently hit objects, or the biggest static objects, and you can really reduce load on a web server. Apple did it for their web sites and went from many web servers that were all super loaded, to a handful that barely break a sweat. (>o|-< If you don't believe me, ask me.
