Got My Ham License Today!

Recommended Posts

OK well all I have right now is a little handheld Alinco DJ-191. I'm going to use it for hang gliding retrieval and the local repeater sorta sucks here in Elsinore. There's another one that pretty much covers all of So Cal on 146.980 and I need to get in touch with those people to get the PL info. I won't be on 440 untill I can get a multimode base unit.

The main reason I got the license was so I can use repeaters when I'm out mine exploring in the deserts and mountains. I like the idea of having the extra communication in case of an emergency. It is also a good thing to have for cross country flying. But I wouldn't mind having more capabilities also...

I used to open radio nets for ham's in the Army...it was our 'contribution to the civilian secotr'...or some shit like that. :S

I think we were keeping our options open should our military commo go down from the inside during an 'incident' or such...:P -Try tracking down all the ham operators all over the country -ya can't do it! VOLIA! Instant communication even if our station goes down...B|

Now add that to the internet, which THANK GAWD Al Gore invented...and we have communication that can't be shut down by any foe. ;)

PS...so does this make you, 'Green light and Ham', a la Dr. Seuss? :|:P

BTW There is a credit card 2M and also 440 on the market that is about the size of a credit card - and lonly slightly thicker than a credit card - would make a great at altitude radio.

Just got my Technician license today. Call sign is KG6ZFI... Any other hams out there?

Yup...WB2ZTE here. First license was 1952 as a Novice. Now a General.

First QSO while in freefall: 1966. 2 meters. Wore a WW II surplus throat mike and headphones.

Used ham radio for communications between ground control and aircraft many times for demo jumps over the years. I operated aeronautical mobile many evenings when flying home from a weekend of flying jumpers. Ham radio is fun from a plane. I could hit repeaters VERY far away.

Although I love ham radio, I doubt I would have gotten involved if computers and the internet existed way back then.

Of course, I'm talking about a time before the commercialization of the transistor and all my rigs had tubes!
