Evelyn 0 #1 May 13, 2005 Man, I thought I was losin it. I've been honking my car horn a lot lately - just randomly and for no reason. Was thinking maybe I was accidently hitting the horn, which is unlikely since I've been driving the same car for 10 years. Was beginning to think maybe I was subconsciously honking without realizing it. Then yesterday the horn went off while my car was parked with no one in it. I had to hit the horn to get it to turn off. Then today when I started my car when leaving work the horn went off and I had to hit it several times to get it to turn off. So now I'm afraid to drive my car until I have the horn repaired because in So. Cal. people will shoot you if you piss them off while driving. It would be just my luck to get behind someone with a gun and have my horn go off. So guess I have to get it fixed, or maybe have it disconnected. Has anyone else had this problem? Was it an easy fix? I absolutely hate car repairs cuz it seems it's twice as expensive for Vette repairs, so I like to have an idea of what's involved before I take it in for service. If anyone can offer advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks!! Life is either a daring adventure or nothing ~ Helen Keller

Mayberry 0 #7 May 13, 2005 What year Vette is it?? With what info you've given my first guess would be the ground contact for the horn/horn relay in the steering wheel center is worn/grounding out & causing the horn to blow. The quick fix to keep it from blowing on its own is to look in your owner's manual under "Fuses/Relays" & find the fuse location in the fuse panel for the horn, & then pull out that fuse. That should solve your problem until you can get someone to look at it & diagnose/repair it, just remember that your horn won't work in the meantime. If that is the problem, they'll have to pull off the steering wheel to get to it. Not a major job, hell if you were near me I could have it done in the time it took you to go buy me a six pack!! Let me know what it turns out to be, ok? Don Here's to friends!

Sheenster303 0 #9 May 13, 2005 My 93 Saturn did it all the time. I'll just be going along and it'll start honking by itself. It wasn't like it was one long honk either. It would be very random, short honks. I pissed a lot of people off. I just disconnected the horn after awhile. I never used it anyway.I'm so funny I crack my head open! jumpchikk 0 #11 May 13, 2005 I had a 1996 Honda Civic that I bought brand new off the showroom floor. Not two weeks later a woman hit me on my college campus. I was furious! I had to make my first car payment driving a rental car. Anyway she hit where my electrical box which was in the front right side. I had another person hit me in that same exact spot on my car a couple of years later. After that, my car door locks would start locking and unlocking on their own and my radio would decide not to play and then the car horn would start randomly going off. It wasn't a problem until I would have to get up in the middle of the night and go remove the fuse that caused it, but mind you I would have to put this fuse back in to listen to my radio or be able to lock and unlock my doors. (Screw using my keyless remote because it wouldn't work for anything after the second hit to that side). I took the car everywhere trying to get someone to fix it. Noone could figure out what was wrong. The breaking point was one morning I was driving to work and my car horn was just constantly going off and it kept getting louder! I passed this cop who was sitting on the side of the road and he pulls me over. I told him what the deal was, proceeded to pop the hood and removed the fuse. Next day, same bat time, same bat channel, I'm driving to work, pass the same cop and my car horn is going off!!! I was livid. I stopped the car, got out with it running, shut the door to the car and do what I always did to shut off the horn which was remove that magical fuse that seemed to work everything on this freakin car. As I did this tho, I hear my car locks engage into the lock position. So, now I am sitting in the parking lot with my car running, purse in passenger seat with extra car key and I'm late for work (this also happened to be the day that started the standardized testing for my fifth grade students). It was a lovely day to be had. I got through that week with that car and then it was GONE!!
jtval 0 #12 May 13, 2005 if its no tt he fuse you may check the connection on the horn. its not to hard to find. just open the hood and look for the thing that looks like an old siren. if the connection is loose or theres some bare wires on it. fix it. could be in the steering wheel as well. if its very sesnitive to the touch and beeps only when you hit the pad than its probably under the padding. probably just some raw wire somewhereMy photos My Videos
Evelyn 0 #13 May 13, 2005 It's a 95 Vette. Thank you for your input. That is the kind of answer I was looking for. I will look in my owner's manual to pull the fuse for now, but at least now I have an idea of what is involved. Thanks. Too bad you don't live in LA. I can't tell you the number of times I've taken my Vette in for service and they could not find the problem. That is why I like to be able to tell them what the problem is when I go in for service. Shotgun 1 #15 May 13, 2005 I had just bought a new Chevy Beretta and was driving around one day with Metallica cranked really loud on the stereo... At some point I noticed a buzzing noise in the background and turned my music down, only to realize that the buzzing sound was my horn going off continuously (maybe my music was a little too loud )... So I pulled over somewhere, frantically reading my owner's manual while people were looking at me all funny because my horn is stuck on... Finally I figured out which fuse to pull and that shut it off... But I'm not one to give advice on fixing cars, though it sounds like Mayberry may have already given you some good advice. Good luck! BillyVance 35 #16 May 13, 2005 Here's my broken horn story... It's a doozy too. A friend of mine from school had died in a car wreck. My mom and I were getting ready to go to the funeral. I was driving my first car, a 1964 Buick Special, a 4 door 355 V8 monster of a car which belonged to my grandmother until she could no longer drive safely. Anyway we were running late and I needed a quick lane change and I grab the turn signal lever and pull it down for the left turn, but I pulled too hard and it broke! So it's hanging limp and the car horn starts going! Just a loooooong blast. Funny, it would stop only when I held the steering wheel in one specific position. I was able to figure out that I could stop the honking by stuffing tissues in the hole on the steering column where the lever was hanging out, to rig it up. It stopped, for a while anyway. Unfortunately it started up again shortly before we got to the funeral home and we were already 10 minutes late! One of the funeral home employees came out and just disconnected the wires at the horn... Dang... I wish I'd known that, but I was only 16... fireflytx 0 #17 May 13, 2005 I went to a thing called Skatopia and part of it was us getting cars and playing demolition derby in a field with them. When a car would die we would set it on fire right where it stopped and one time a cars horn went off while it was on fire and it didn't stop until the car burned almost completely to the ground. We did try to stop it by shooting at the steering column with a potato gun. Moral of the story: You can't stop your car from honking by shooting it with a potato gun."Well behaved women rarely make history"
