My ER vist today

I just got out of the emergency room an hour ago. I was doing a shredder this morning with Danielle and Robert and I had a very hard opening and I thought I had broke my collar bone and some ribs on my left side. It opened so hard I saw stars and it broke the rightside steering line and I had to fly and land on the rear risers. The only problem came when I was downwind and trying to turn base my left arm collapsed with pain and I had to pull the left riser with my right arm. I finally got on final and when I tried to flare, I couldn't pull with my left arm and I tried to PLF it but I apparently was still pulling down on the right riser trying to flare and I piled it in. X-rays showed no permanent injuries or breaks but I do have some torn muscles in my upper left chest and neck and a canopy that needs to be re-lined. Oh well it could have been worse. I've got some great painpills and I am going to turn on some Crystal Method and Pink Floyd and enjoying the evening. Adios Amigos,

Hey Mon,
I think it was my pack job and not the canopy that screwed the pooch. I'm going to get with my rigger and see what I did wrong. Someone else said it sounded like a line dump. Who knows. When you throw laundry out in the wind at 120 I guess it can do some weird shit.

Don't let the line dump theory get you. If you're bag stays shut until line stretch, that's all that needs to happen.

There's a good chance you let the slider down the lines ever so slightly before closing up the bag. I have no Idea how you pack otherwise but slider control is key.

I still can't raise my left arm or turn my head to the left but the Doc said it will get better in a few days. Oh well that is part of life and the risks you take while enjoying it to the max. I talked to my rigger today and he is going to go over my canopy real good and have it ready for me so hopefully I can get in a few at the Memorial Day boogie. I decided not to chop my main since it was stable and fly-able and I wouldn't be able to pull the left toggle on the reserve anyway. I fiqured I would be better off staying with a bigger canopy (220 Main) on risers that I was familiar with than to go to my reserve (PD193) and have a faster landing speed with only one arm. It was one of those quick decisions that I was able to walk away from.

I don't have enough experience to give advice or say what someone should or shouldn't do in that situation. I'll leave that up to the folks that have been doing this for a while and maybe one day I'll be one of them!Take care Bro,
