One of the easiest and fastest commutes home I've ever had!

Recommended Posts

It happened by accident really. When I was getting ready to split from one highway to another on my way home from work, I noticed an ambulance with all the lights on in my rear view mirror. I made room for it to pass, and when it did, I pulled back over behind it. Interestingly enough it was a Critical Care Transport ambulance that seemed to be going out of the city with all the hospitals behind us... That seemed odd to me. Well anyway, it turned out to be one of the fastest and least stressful drives for me, going at least 85 mph most of the way except when coming up on heavy traffic ahead. It was soooo easy! No "get the fuck outta my way" for me that time! :D

Now the strange part is, I followed that ambulance for damn near 35 miles to my home exit! I had to wonder, why is a critical care transport ambulance going so far at high speeds and with the lights on? If a patient was a critical care status, wouldn't a private medical jet or medevac helicopter make more sense? It just doesn't seem right... I have no idea how much further the ambulance was going, but it sure was strange...

That's a good question. I got carbon monoxide poisoning a while back and spent 8 hours in the ER on oxygen. They debated sending me to the hyperbaric chamber (I guess that's what it's called) about 2 hours away. They finally decided it would be quicker to just leave me where I was because by the time they got the helicopter there and got me to the other place it would have taken the same amount of time to drive. And the drive would have done the same thing as leaving me where I was. Maybe the ambulance you were chasing had a similar type of situation... dunno... just my ramblings... :S

Now we have to some one that can tell us if the sirens were going too!

Hyperbaric was my thought too - ground because you wouldn't want to take them to any altitude. Course there could be many other reasons. I used to live in Montevallo - can't see why any ambulance would leave Birmingham unless they had equipment on board that was needed for a pick up.

Yeah, no matter what, I cannot hear the sirens... I usually make up for it by being extra aware of what is around me, always looking in the mirrors every now and then.

I remember one deaf friend who wasn't paying attention to what was going on behind him. Never looked in the rear view mirror to see the cop that had been chasing his ass for 4 or 5 miles! :S Got another couple of cop cars on the chase before he realized what was up... They were NOT amused... :$

There were times I had to do some long-distance transports between hospitals on a code 3. It happens.

And, every once in a while, maybe it was pms, maybe I'm just a bitch sometimes, I would get pissed about people on a close follow behind us. Not everyone...but there were a few vehicles that tailed so close that my driver couldn't see them in the mirrors and I felt like I was practically sitting on their lap. I know they couldn't see around us in case we had a sudden stop. And sudden stops happen all the time when you're driving with lights and sirens. So, I'd make the driver stop the ambulance, hop out, and unload on 'em. They'd back off. ;)

Ahh, now those were some good times! :)

I works but, Illegal.
I found out by following an Ambulance from Syracuse to Watertown (going to Lake Placid/home)
70mph all the way on State route(2 lane).
I bragged to my teamates at the track and one of my fellow Bobsled'tiers:ph34r: was a N.Y. State Trooper who then gave me the legal breakdown on it.[:/]
