Does your online persona reflect who you really are?

Recommended Posts

You make some good points. I mean, I think it's something like 68% of communication is through body language...it's something on the order of only 8% or 12%, something like that, is acutally the words that you use, and that is all that we have online. So yeah, a lot is lost as far as that goes, I totally agree.

And, in the links you provided, a lot of what they say supports what I'm saying (actually, it seems that a lot of people here are agreeing, whether they realize it or not, maybe because my point is unclear [shrug]). For instance:

Quote

Naturally vigilant and private persons may drawn to such anonymous interactive features of the Internet as this allows them to converse with others in uninhibited ways and form new relationships with greater ease than in real life circumstances. Anonymous electronic communication may also attract less conforming individuals who use the medium to rant radical ideologies or discuss taboo social belief systems they maintain, yet in real life either self-inhibit or find few others who share those views.

and:

Outbursts of anger, over-sexualized comments, or blunt remarks which are typically self-monitored thoughts in real life may form the basis of typed messages to fellow on-line users in interactive forums.

(I couldn't get your first link to work)

Essentially, these are saying that the internet frees people to say and do things that they wouldn't normally say or do IRL, but the key is that they have these thoughts or feelings or urges, they just filter them IRL, while the internet allows them to be comfortable enough to not use those filters. Which to me means that the online persona can be more indicative of the true self (I don't want to generalize, because a lot of people are pretty much the same online as IRL...I'm really speaking more about the huge dichotomies that you sometimes see between the online persona and the IRL persona here...what accounts for the difference is what I am interested in).

Am I wrong? Granted, some people are truly acting, yet, take for instance someone who flames, incites, etc. They are doing it (the acting let's say) for some reason, aren't they? It fulfills something inside them, wouldn't you say? So, what does that really say about the person who "acts" like that online, yet IRL is the sweetest, kindest, nicest person you would ever want to meet and would never say a single bad word about you (at least to your face, as far as you know). What explains the dichotomy? If it's just simply acting, then why do they do it? For what purpose? And if it's not simply just acting, then doesn't it say something more about their true character than their IRL persona?

Bingo Wendy....

I tend to look at the online personas as a truer look into peoples inner workings. As many who have met me.. I am pretty much what you see is what you get. I am old and decrepit.. complex but fun loving.

If I think someone is a Chickenshit Chicken Hawk.. I will express that in real life. And man are there a bunch of them out there.

When I was trying to be cool here on DZ.com, I wasn't at all like myself. Hell, if anybody knows me, you know that I am FAR from cool.
Once I relaxed and just started BSing with people I know, then my online persona came to represent more of Who I really am; but then again, it's hard to judge one's own character, so I guess I really don't know. Nobody has ever accused me of being a Troll, though.....

I make fun of people a lot more in Real-life. As a matter of fact, other than Jumping, making fun of BCH7773 is my favorite dropzone activity. :) All in good humor, and I usually get back what I put into it. :D You can't make fun of people here on DZ.com as much without people getting all pissed off - sarcasm and body language don't convey over the internet really well.

Sure. If you really want one. But I think you'd like the openings better on a Xaos, 'specially on that BM suit.

Better hurry and place the order though. I'll be done with the gear sales thing in about.... two weeks.

I wonder.

Probably the most candid comment I ever got was from MJOSparky who told me " I thought you were much younger" when he met me.

When I met Fox Force Four, when I video'd them at Nationals, they all seem really tentative until they spent some time with me. Once they got to know me a little bit, they were the most fun I've had skydiving.

I got some of that wierd "you're just a little scary" stuff in Europe, when I was over there. Again, easily overcome with some time and some beer.

Probably the very best meeting I have ever had via Dropzone.com was when Flyangel2 came screaming across the dirt dive for the 121 way sequential record when she humped my leg for SkyBitch. It prompted one of my fellow skydivers to comment "JP could fall into a bucket of tits and come out sucking his thumb"

Cause I love and respect my female skydiving brothers.

I've stopped posting in the political forums because I know when I express myself there I can't really express my feelings without being attacked. It's OK, cause I mostly know most of the major players, and they know me. In person.

Gareth Holder is the most true to himself both online and in person.

Both BillVon and Quade are much less dogmatic in person. And I count them both as my friends.

Find out for yourself. Come and meet them. I have had lifetime changing experiences learning from my wildly different DZ.com buddies from literally all over the world.

PM if you need more explanation. I love the internet. It has opened a whole new world of skydiving to me.

By gosh, you're right! I totally spaced the openings on the suit!

So, should I go with the 21, or the 27? I'm thinking that a move to an 88 might be too drastic from my 150 though. Ya think a 98 might be a better choice, or should I stick with the 88, knowing I'll just have to work my way into that size?

Oh, and if a few of you newer posters are reading this and even start to imagine I'm serious, I'M NOT!

(I want a 68, but she won't sell it to me.)
