skybytch 273 #52 May 19, 2005 Left a good job in the city... Two years ago I quit working for Square One - called it a leave of absence but we all knew I wasn't coming back. Gave a decent amount of notice and helped find a replacement. Had nothing else lined up at the time. Took the money I earned on a side gig and played and traveled all summer long. Picked up a new job while I was playing but didn't start it til September. A year later I said fuck it to that job and the state of Florida and came back to California... but there were extenuating circumstances... Only thing I'd do different if I did it again would be to have more $$ to play with.
masterrig 1 #53 May 19, 2005 Nine years ago, I'd just had enough of the job I'd been at for 17-yrs. I just got in my vehicle and drove away and never looked back. I didn't say a word to anyone at my job... just left. Took 'em 3-weeks to find me! Got all the money they owed me, too. 2-weeks later, I was building a shop and went full-time rigging. Never been happier! Blood pressure went to what it should be. Life, is good! Chuck

nerd137 0 #55 May 19, 2005 QuoteOne day in 93 I threw every thing I owned into storage, quit my job, and with $250.00 to my name headed headed out for the boogie circut to pack. Yeah, but when you arrived at the boogie circuit did you dramatically drop your bag, turn to the local jumpers, and solemnly proclaim in a low voice, "I'm cutting away" as everyone on the dropzone rejoiced and showered you with cheers of brotherly support? ...and then get smothered with pies? masterrig 1 #56 May 19, 2005 Yes, I did. Plus, I had my savings account from my old job for all those years. Things worked-out fairly well. Funny thing though. When I 'walked-off', I didn't think of a damned thing, other than getting as far from that place as I could. Chuck
SkiD_PL8 0 #57 May 19, 2005 Also did you drive from boogie to boogie or what? That is something I would actually consider. With the way things are going at the moment I am working 2 whuffo jobs and only getting in like 2 jumps on sunday since I jump at a small cessna DZ. At that rate getting enough jumps for my tandem rating is years away. If this is still possible is there a packing concession that travels the boogie circuit? Greenie in training. Ron 10 #61 May 19, 2005 With 104 jumps your choices of how to eat are not very good. About the only "industy" job you can do is pack....And packers don't jump much. The best thing for you to do is find a nice night job near a full time DZ. You can live on the DZ and still have money to jump. This I did. Worked out well....I used to jump all day then go work. Yes I did drive the whole way and you are your own packing concession. At least thats how it was back then. It may have changed some what but a little research should give you the info you'll need. My first trip lasted 10 months before I returned home and I was only there two weeks before leaving again for another 9 months. I was in the same boat you are in now. Two different bullshit low paying jobs. No time to jump no extra money to spend, blaa blaa blaa. I was Al Bundy with out the red headed harpy. On the road I found I was making WAY more money packing than I was with two straight jobs at home and I was my own boss going where and when I wanted. Plus because I was living in the back of my truck or my tent, I was not paying rent anywhere except the storage unit where my crap was stashed. If you have no real responsibilities at this point in your life and this sounds interesting to you then get going what you still can. The boogie season is just starting. You can not begin to imagine how much you will grow as a result of doing this. k P.S. If things go horribly wrong for you on the road please don't blame me for it. The road is a grand adventure. Some times good some times bad but hey such is life
