STATE TRIVIA-

Recommended Posts

Although I realize this is sort of info isn't as "cool" as what "felching" is, I believe it's interesting just the same. :)
*Alaska- Based on an Aleut word "alaxsxaq" literally meaning "object toward which the action of the sea is directed" or more simply "the mainland."

*Nebraska- Name based on an Oto Indian word that means "flat water," referring to the Platte River.

*Kansas- From the Sioux Indian for "south wind people."

*Anaconda, Montana- In Copperopolis, Montana during the Civil War, owners of the local copper mine were strong supporters of the Union cause. Late in the war, word reached them that General Grant's troops were circling General Lee's troops "like an anaconda." To celebrate, they changed the mine's name to Anaconda, and the town eventually followed suit.

*Pullman, Washington- The citizens of this community decided to name their town after George M. Pullman, the rich manufacturer of the Pullman Car hoping he would shower his namesake with new libraries and other civic gifts. When they invited him to the ceremonies, he sent his regrets, a nice thank you note and a check for $50. That was the last the town heard from him.

*Bushon and Latham, Kansas- In the 1880s, workers for the Missouri Pacific railroad were building a new line through Kansas. To celebrate the success of their hometown baseball team, the St. Louis Browns, they named 14 stations on the line for their favorite players. Twelve of the stations have been renamed, but Arlie Latham (shortstop) and Doc Bushong (pitcher) are still on the map in Kansas.

I used to live in Melbourne, Florida. There were two white men who first settled that area, one was from England and the other was from Australia. They would get together in the evenings and play checkers. They could not agree on a name for their new town where they were now settled. Each wanted to name it after their old home town from where they had immigrated. So they decided to play a game of checkers to determine who had the naming rights. The Australian won.

And just down the road from there was the town of Malabar, which means "bad (sand)bar" in Spanish, named after a Spanish sailor who ran aground there in the 1700's. He came swimming ashore, muttering "Malabar!" And probably a few other words too, which wouldn't make a good town name.

One summer day Way back when the train first started passing through central AZ, the train conductor tossed a bunch of hobos off the train that he'd found stowed away. It was reported that when the first hobo got off the train, the first words out of his mouth were, "Eloy! es muy calliente" and thus Eloy was born.

Nope. I'd have to say that Twardo is right. Except that Kingwood is also where kids can have a little more freedom than if you live somewhere cool in Houston.

Take it from someone who live in Clear Lake (which is Texan for "less homogeneous only than The Woodlands"}

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
