DeNReN 0 #1 May 27, 2005 Sooo.....its been raining here for the past couple of weeks...today esp..its freaking pouring......so hydroplaning is a nasty problem....heard quite a few reports on the radio at work today of cars off the road upside down etc.....lots of ppl coming into the shop for burnt out wiper motors and replacing half worn tires....etc etc. Now...a little lesson 1st is in order I guess......wider tires will generally hydroplane much easier then narrower tires....now a bald wide tire will hydroplane very easily in the slightest amount of standing water... Ok...on to the Chachi part.....for those of you that are not familiar with the term.........think of the old sit com Happy Days....Fonzies younger cousin was always wanting to be "cool" like the fonze....but could never measure up......his name was Chachi (not sure on the spelling)........soooo...all those kids(and some adults ) that take ...lets say a honda.....and put 4 grand worth of rims and exp sticky performance tires along with other assorted crap....usually including a stereo with enough sub woofer power to launch a small rocket into space...neon lights etc etc...........well thats a Chachi. OK...so most of these Chachies have no idea what there doing and just want there car to look cool..like on "The Fast and the Furious"....soo....ongo the supersoft performance tires and of course they lower the car....because thats cooler....so now that $1500 worth of super sticky super soft rubber is being worn away at a amazing rate by there severly out of alignment car....hmmmm....very wide bald tires on a car with a inexperianced driver..... Ok OK.....I'm trying to get on with my tale........jeeze....give me a break I'm a mechanic not a writer So I leave work tonight in a torential downpour.....stop and get some beverages(I'm off till tues)....sure enough..kids goes to the inside of the turn way to fast for the conditions and the tires he has on.... Well well well.....I really wish I had a video cam mounted in my car........kid made it to the apex of the turn before he got ontop of the water(downhill left hander)....I saw the car twitch...then brake lights(thats a freaking huge no no btw)...car took off across the road hitting the curb launching the car into the air 4 or 5 feet at a very nasty angle(I thought it was going over).....somehow it didnt barrel roll and land on all 4 after bouncing both right side rims off the concrete sidewalk and turf.... dropdeded 0 #2 May 27, 2005 Had a conversation a few days ago about the cars kids drive these days. I was in High School late 70's. Muscle cars. DeNReN 0 #3 May 27, 2005 I actually perfer the lighter imports to heavy domestic muscle cars.....power to weight ratio gets better every year.....couple hundred horse in a light car that can corner like a humming bird....weeeeeeee Mind you.......muscle cars have there attraction also......nothing like being sucked back into the seat....but....damnit...steering with the throttle is just not the fastest way through a corner... I have seen some very well done "Chachified" cars...but they are few and far between.....mostly it's kids and wana be's........put a set of wheels and a can exhaust on some piece of crap..and poof......your cool.....NOT. That kid tonight thought he was "the man"..........oopsy.....there goes a few K of daddys money......maybe thats what bothers me..hard to say......reguardless..........
