Patents

However, he works for Qualcomm, a very big company with an agressive patent policy. It's almost certain that the legal department handled all the details.

That said, being the kind of guy he is, Bill probably does understand the patent process backwards, forwards, and inside out.

I used to be a legal assistant working on intellectual property issues. Patents are very complicated and arcane. Most attorneys don't know the first thing about patents, you need a specialist.

Short answer, for the US, prepare to spend a few thousand dollars just in filing fees, not attorney costs, fees with the Patent and Trademark Office, and at least a year of your time.

If you have a patentable idea, find a patent attorney and discuss it with him or her. Don't waste time, since your priority depends on how early you file (generally, the law has tons of caveats). Most patent attorneys will at least sit down with you and give you a quick evaluation for cheap, if not free.

Keep in mind, I am not an attorney and cannot give you any legal advice!

Geez...

And I thought this was gonna be one of those kinky threads... :$ :)

For me, the only meaning "patent" has, is what patent leather shoes or boots a woman is wearing! >:(
