I'm a dumb ass!!!

Recommended Posts

Ok looking for a boost out there! Jump 32 went to shit.

We were doing a three way and I was diving towards my slot I ended up over shooting within 2 feet of a gal because I didn't put enough brakes on. I didn't touch her and I spun around and docked in my spot within a second or two. I was suprised when I started to slow down and knew I had to much speed and I was going to over shoot but at that time I just didn't want to hit her. My instructor who was number three jumped my ass when we got on the ground and said a lot of stuff that really kind of pissed me off. We watched the video after the dive and a few big number jumpers told me that my instructor was overeacting just a touch. Granted I take responsibilty for my actions and know what I need to work on in the future I want to be safe and definetly don't want to hurt anyone. Shit I am still learning. ANYWAYS long story short has anyone out there had close calls because I think I just ate the entire humble pie.B|

We've all been there done that. Don't kick yourself too bad. You'll learn and get better. And remember not to worry too much about the delivery, and concentrate on the mesage your instructor was conveying. Some people are just too up tight. Next time relax and remember slow is fast and fast is slow.

Thanks man.. I am too much of a perfectionist. My biggest fear is hurting someone by something stuiped I did.. Point taken I just want to make my instructor feel like he can trust me.. Thanks again

Dude, between pilot chutes wrapped around my leg, reserve rides on my A license check dive to barreling in on a formation (quite visible on skydivingmovies.com), I've screwed it all up but burn in...and I hope I'm like 80 when that happens (as I said in another post, no need to go back to crapping myself). Learn from it and if your instructor was worth a crap and/or you are a serious jumper, you'll be fine. If you never expect to screw up, you're setting yourself up for serious failure. Blue skies bro!

P.S. We're all dumbasses, anyone telling you otherwise is too full of themselves. I mean, who the hell would throw themselves out of planes (I know most of the ones we jump from aren't perfectly good) if they weren't dumbasses. Love being a dumbass! :D

We all make mistakes, as long as we learn from them all is well (especially if no one gets wounded in the process). As far as instructors go, I expect mine to correct me if I make an error. I choose him for a reason (he has a strong personality for my stubborn head) and I expect him to correct me for my errors. I doubt your instructor was scolding you even thought it felt that way at the time he spoke with you. I just screwed up a Hybrid the other day because I was totally focused on the exit. I had a few bad exits and I didn't want to blow this one. Well I nailed the exit and forgot to release a grip that ruined the skydive. Yes I felt like shit, but I learned.

Have fun and stay safe,

Phil

You guys are great. Thanks for the boost! I'm working on braking tommarow, I am sure that this wont be my last fuck up and I hope I can learn with this type of scenero instead of someone getting hurt. The humble pie always seems help me out.. It's nice knowing others are willing to admit to there screw ups. Thanks again.:P

Jason....... thats his job.... he will be critical of mistakes you make, especially if it involves the safety of another jumper.....but he SHOULD choose his words with care, I left before this happened, but I am sure I know who was involved by how you phrased your post.

overshooting and impacting another jumper can be quite serious... but with your jump #'s you are going to make mistakes..... this is why we usually have low timers using us for the ten-X ring while learning to dive....

You are doing very well at your jump #'s. perhaps he did overreact a little, but you know what mistakes were made - learn from them, even if you think they were minor.

Pm me with more details if you wish.

Hey dude, like i tell my students, Now you know the upper limit and we can start backing off from there. B| No one got hurt, you learned something, and are willing to learn more to prevent it from hapening again. Sounds like a good thing to me.;)

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

Trust me, just when you get this down, you'll try something else that's new and screw that up too! I'm not saying that because I really do think you're a dumb ass, I'm saying it because it happens to everyone.

Relax and learn from your mistakes. Now, if your instructor is still saying you are making the same mistake 30 jumps from now, then you have a problem! ;)

Don't be afraid to make mistakes. It'll hold you back from what you want to achieve. Take those mistakes and learn from them and don't do them again. It was only Jump #32. Quit beatin' yourself up. It's all a learning curve. Keep doing that same dive till you get it right... then go to the next dive. Repetition is the best teacher. You're going to be fine. ;)

After a good nights sleep and frustrations have subsided I am the one that probable overeacted. Every one is right my instructor wanted to make a point and he did. I definetly will be working on this to prevent future close calls regarding this particular F*** Up.

You are not judged when you fall down but you are judged on how quickly you get back up.

Thanks for the boost everyone.B|:PB|

Ya know what, I've done some stupid things in the sport, like pulling low, hitting my head on the step of the Cessna, flaring too fast to make my canopy pop up and then stallB|.....but ya know what? I have learned from each one of my mistakes. Mistakes help us learn to be better flyers. Don't get discouraged, I am sure there will always be people who overeact and are critical, but don't let it bother you too much.
This is a dangerous sport, so you have to keep that in mind if an instructor or DZO yells at you; they usually just have your best interests at heart. And remember: we all make mistakes, and we need to learn from them.

Everybody makes mistakes, and everybody's mistakes are different.

I was PISSSED on my 11th jump because I made my first error. In fact, windcatcher was on-site for it.

Excuse the copypaste, but here's the story:

__________

I didn't get my helmet's chin strap done up all the way on my 2nd jump off the day, so it was pulling and trying to come off most of the jump, and when I threw the PC (first jump on a throwout rig!) it finally came off. I looked up and watched it go, and thought a couple seconds later "Shit, I should have fabric by now", turns out I was so distracted by the helmet fiasco, I never let go of the PC! Tossed it, and got a clean opening..

________

Was it a minor mistake? Sure. Did I learn from it nonetheless? Yup.

I'd take him up on this Jason. Roy has a TON of experience with making mistakes. You can learn a lot about making mistakes from him. :P:D

Boy....we have known each other wayy too long :P, but out of all the silly mistakes I have made in this sport, I can honestly say I havent ever created my own mal,
like say......hooking up a toggle wrong so that the brake line flys off as soon as I pull it off the riser.... or something like that :D

now THAT would be a silly mistake... :S

What EXACTLY did you do? I think part of the story is missing. If you didn't hit the formation you were docking on then there shouldn't be a problem, you know you need to slow down sooner.

"Mal" seems like such a strong word Roy, given that I've landed that canopy on rears on numerous occasions. I guess I should defer to you on this subject though, given you outnumber me in experience with almost every type of mal imaginable. How many reserve rides do you have now? :P:D

I put the brakes on to late and just barley missed her. I was suprised by my speed and the vid showed me trying to compensate for my overspeed about 30 feet before her although I should have cupped air instead of just getting big. Definatley all my fault but I gurantee I will work on that! Besides that the dive went great.
