Just on another note...everyone makes mistakes...no one is perfect.

I did something stupid this past weekend, and didn't even think twice about it until I was approached by another jumper with more experience. (I was pushing it back from a long spot...over a swamp and the woods with open fields behind it I could have chosen instead)...BUT What she did was put into consideration if wind conditions had changed, etc..I had left myself no out at all. I didn't even think about that..all I knew was that I was making it back to the DZ...never crossed my mind that if I hit a gust or stronger level of winds..I wouldn't get as much drive...and put me in a very serious situation that could have turned sour...

I took her advice and thanked her for bringing that into consideration..A packer was sitting right there and said "well think about this too.." and went on with something else that even she had not thought of in case put in that situation. We both thanked him, for we had both gained more knowledge.

When you do make a mistake....own up and most importantly learn from it.

Think twice about selling all of your gear...

It's hard to read past the yelling sometimes. But, try to take a few important things away from this on your own.

Do you remember what was going through your head when you were in the landing zone? Did the winds throw you off, or was the speed of the canopy a little more than you were used to and you ended up heading toward the tarmac due to overshooting your lz?

Did seeing that you were headed for the tarmac freak you out and you forgot to flare? Do you remember that part and why you did not flare?

Here's something you did right, though, you didn't make a hard turn trying to avoid the tarmac. Not knowing your lz or what direction you were going, I might suspect that doing a small flat turn might have helped, but no turn is better than a hard turn to smack yourself into the earth. So this could have been worse if you'd made other mistakes.

No one should tell you not to quit. But, if you are quitting because of dz.com then you might want to take a break from this website and rethink the sport on your own for a while then consult your instructors (non-husband instructors.)

If you want to stay in the sport and be safer, you will seek help, probably consider upsizing your canopies, too, because not flaring is a very big deal.

I think the shoes were the smallest part of this, so I hope that you aren't stuck on the shoe thing.

I froze when I realized I was going land on the taxi way, having ground fixation and not flaring has been one of my bigger problems in the past, but the last 15 or so jumps, it hasnt been a problem, my landings were spot on

About 100 jumps ago I screwed up a landing and scraped my knees really badly....however, I was under a high-performance canopy, and I'm lucky that I didn't break my femurs or worse.... That was just a couple jumps ago, in the learning curve. 15 jumps is absolutely nothing.

It might be a good idea to sell your gear and buy some gear that is more appropriate to your experience level. Now is a good time to really evaluate what you are doing and to realize how unforgiving and deadly what you are doing can be. No matter what factors have contributed to your current situation, you WANT to be responsible for yourself. It'd suck to die because somebody else was in control of your fate....

Last year you posted about realizing how half-assed some of your instruction was. I remember the post. You got some advice in it; not easy advice or even necessarily inexpensive, I'm afraid.

It included getting a canopy course, and reading the SIM, and reading other stuff out there. People like Tom Buchanan posted to it.

It's very possible that you've skated on stuff, especially being young, female, and a "member of the family." People tend to forget that just because it's easy for someone with 300 or 3000 jumps to remember something doesn't make it easy for someone with 50 to remember it.

But you do need to follow through and do the boring stuff. It's all part of the background that makes making the right decision realtime possible.

Good luck. I hope you keep jumping, and I hope you start being a bitch about going ahead and being slower to do stuff simply because you want ot do it yourself, and right.

I still dirt-dive slow. Nothing makes me crazier than going through a new dive once, and then trying to make it go as fast as possible. It's not going to be that fast in the air (we're not talking team jumps here). I want to think about where my body's going to be, and internalize it.

I'm sorry, but I diagree with this statement. Most of what I have leaned in skydiving has come from other jumpers with more experience than me and I never had to pay them a dime. I have learned something from every jump and usually the info comes without me asking or paying for it. There are great people in the sport and not all of them are well known nor do they work in the sport. At our dz the LO's are not paid staff and they are some of the most knowledgable people at the dz. They freely give, you just have to listen.

I want to clarify my statement. I do know what you mean however. No one wants to have anyone crater. When this shit happens it effects everyone in this sport...the DZ it happens at and your family.

This is a general statment to all those out there.

My statment was more ment along the lines of you need to do this shit on your own, no one will be there to tell you how to handle a mal when it happens. NO ONE...you and you alone need to learn and understand what to do when the shit hits the fan. Once you deploy your canopy you are alone, there is no on there that will talk to you and tell you what to do. So what happens when that mal arises and you crater...that is your choice to stop that. If you didnt take the time to ask questions on how to deal that is your problem not anyone elses. You cannot expect everyone to do everything for you. The "poor me" they didnt teach me, or they didnt do this or they didnt do that thing will get you killed...Period.

To be completely honest...that is life in general.

When people start yelling it is out of fear of what could be. NO ONE wants anyone to die or get hurt. When we see stuff that could be prevented, or see someone who has an attitude about things...this is angering. Those are the people that dont get it, and dont learn or for that matter dont even listen. Those people get hurt or killed.

If we didnt give a shit, we wouldnt say anything, just let these people crater...hell it is natrual selection right? NO

That's too bad. I've had better luck at DZs in both northern and southern California. Elsinore and Perris have formal programs for RW training that is free and very valuable. This weekend was Bridge the Gap. Not free - $40 boogie fee - but got a lot for it, and I was only able to attend one day.
