MarkM 0 #7 June 8, 2005 Personally I think it's the fries and cokes at fast food joints that's the killer. I mean, how is a mcdonalds hamburger any worse for you than one you grill at home?

Additives, preservatives and fillers. Not to mention the feces that ends up in the meat from poor processing at slaughterhouses. Buy your meat from a respectable grocery (Whole Foods is a good one), one who uses their own slaughterhouse and is not bent on pushing the slaughter line as fast as possible to save a buck, and you will be getting much better meat. You can lose weight on any type of diet...whether it's healthy for your body is a whole other story. Hope this helps...Miami
SpeedRacer 1 #13 June 8, 2005 McD's says they don't use fillers in their hamburger. From their website: McDonald's uses only 100% pure beef to make our hamburgers - no additives, fillers, or preservatives. * Our beef contains 22-24% fat - that's less fat than most hamburger meat available in supermarkets. * Our beef suppliers conduct over 2,000 safety and quality checks, including microbial testing, at every beef patty plant. ---------- That's their story. Since 2002 US McD's has been importing some beef, but not from South America as some people believe. They're getting it from Australia & New Zealand. They claim they can't get enough lean beef from American cattle, which are predominantly corn-fed, so they're getting leaner, grass-fed beef from those countries. Some people believe that grass-fed cattle are actually healthier (though not quite as big) as corn-fed, & need less in the way of anti-biotics. So it is possible that McD's beef is actually healthier than the stuff you usually get in the supermarket. mailin 0 #14 June 8, 2005 I'm friends with a woman who's husband is an FDA inspector for fast food chains in the north east. He says the meats that McDonalds uses is very high quality - better than many 'sit down' restaurants he's seen. JenArianna Frances

Miami 0 #17 June 8, 2005 How long were they using beef tallow (lard) to fry their french fries while they were claiming to use vegetable oil before they got busted? McDonalds is a huge entity that has a very very big influence on who inspects and controls their standards. Bottom line they are out for the almighty dollar and could really give a rats ass about the consumer.Miami

Did he happen to mention how often the FDA is allowed inspect the slaughter houses McDonalds gets their meat from? Or the restrictions the FDA has to test the meat for salmonella or E.coli? McDonalds has an absurd number of lawyers and politicians in their pockets...Miami

So it is possible that McD's beef is actually healthier than the stuff you usually get in the supermarket. You can get better beef than the 30% stuff that comes in tubes at the supermarket. And depending on where you are, you can get very good beef in regards to the grass and leanness. After Super Size Me, some woman went 30 days at McDs and lost weight. Unlike the star who averaged 5000 cal/day, she just kept it low. The shakes and fries are very bad, but the burgers are fine, esp without the cheese. And if you have the option of losing the sauce, that's a decent chunk of calories removed. I find In-N-Out's burgers do just fine when you can taste the actual meat and veg toppings. HOW DARE THEY BECOME SO BIG AND SUCCESSFUL!!! SpeedRacer 1 #21 June 8, 2005 yep, the huge wopping calories come from the supersized sodas & fries, and the other deep-fried stuff. The burgers without cheese or that mayo-sauce are probably relatively low in calories. wartload 0 #22 June 8, 2005 Not so hard to believe -- two weeks of having "the squirts" and you only lost 8 pounds?
wartload 0 #23 June 8, 2005 I have no doubts that their meet is high-quality. I believe that it is. My qualms with the company is that they have allowed the local store operations to slip to below third-world standards in many parts of the country. Here's my test: I don't want to eat in a place where the overall sanitation is so bad that I wouldn't want to sit on the toilets in the bathroom. I figure that if the management doesn't pay attention to that, they don't watch whether or not the employees using those bathrooms wash their hands on the way out. By that test, there aren't many fast food places where I want to eat anymore.
TALONSKY 0 #24 June 8, 2005 Way back in 1987 I lost 110 LBS eating fast food. The trick for me was I only ate two small hamburgers a day and nothing else. Kirk
