soulshine 0 #1 June 3, 2005 I'm beating my brains out here applying for every grant and scholarship that I qualify for. Anyone know of a good website or book that I can search for more? Everything at the library is scattered and the internet searches I've been doing are turning up a bunch of trash. SarahC07 0 #8 June 3, 2005 Now, I'm not all that experienced with this stuff (my parentals helped me out) ... but I think the government will do something along the lines of unsubsidized loans... but you have to qualify... and I don't know what makes you qualify. Are you financially independent? Because I think if someone claims you as a dependent on their income tax return, then you don't qualify for unsubsidized loans. I'm sorry... I'm not being all that helpful! But I know a few people who have... oher than that... I know a few people who max out a few credit cards to help them along... not the best way... but, hey! karenmeal 0 #9 June 3, 2005 I was doing some research, and if you have good genes maybe you can sell some of your eggs! They will pay you like 5,000 per time! Nightingale 0 #12 June 3, 2005 Talk to the financial aid office at your school. They probably know of a lot of local scholarships that you wouldn't find online. They're usually only a few hundred dollars each, but it adds up.
PhreeZone 20 #13 June 3, 2005 www.fastweb.com Probally the single best online site for scholarships. Only issue is they have a large audience too so lots of people are competing for the awards. Make sure to check with your employer, and your parents employer. I got $4500 out of my dads to pay for me to take classes.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Nightingale 0 #14 June 3, 2005 What qualifies you for unsubsidizedstafford loans is: US citizen No drug convictions/felonies enrolled in a degree program Doesn't matter if someone is claiming you as a dependant. My parents are claiming me this year because they're paying my car/health insurance, and I have no income other than what I get from selling the occasional air bear. For subsidized stafford loans, those are need based as well as the other qualifications above. You're more likely to meet the need based qualification if you're on your own and claiming yourself on your taxes (rather than your parents claiming you), but I qualified for the subsidized loans as an undergrad, and well, my dad has worked very hard to make sure money isn't something we've ever really had to worry about. So, if your parents are still claiming you, so long as your parents aren't millionaires or something, you can probably still get the subsidized loan as well. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and fill out a FAFSA form. Select your school, and the dept. of education will automatically send the results of the FAFSA to your school for you. From their site: To be eligible to receive federal student aid, you must meet certain requirements. You must be: * A U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen * Registered with Selective Service (see www.sss.gov for more information) * Attending a participating school * Working toward a degree or certificate * Making satisfactory academic progress Also * You must not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on a federal education loan * You must have financial need (except for unsubsidized Stafford Loans) * You must not have any drug convictions __ Also, if those don't cover all your expenses, many banks have loans that are specifically to cover living expenses while you're in school. I use Bank of America's "education maximizer" loan. If you're not working, it requires a co-signer with good credit, though. Edit: If at all possible, use grants, scholarships and student loans to pay for your education. Student loans are MUCH cheaper than credit cards, and student loan companies are a lot more willing to work with you on how and when you pay them back. Maxing out credit cards is NEVER a good way to go. It's a good way to ruin your credit and if your credit isn't good, you have a hard time buying a house, renting an apartment, or buying a car. A loan is a much better way to go, plus, you don't have to pay back a student loan as long as you're in school. A credit card will make you start paying immediately, and at a much higher interest rate. (most credit cards that are offered to students have an interest rate of over 20% after their initial sign up period. Even if you have a really good credit card, you won't find much better than 9%. Most student loans are less than 5%. Stafford loans are even cheaper.)
SkydiveNFlorida 0 #15 June 3, 2005 Well, i'm probably not much help here seeing as I am a slacker when it comes to grants and scholarships. I got a scholarship from the school, but it was automatic. I am assuming you've filled out the fafsa, did you not qualify for Pell, or any loans? Even after the school scholarship, subsidized and unsub loans I still had to take a signature loan out to pay for living expenses for next year. If your parents claim you, or you are under 24, you will not qualify for Pell or Subsidized loans if they make "too much" which could be any amount over the poverty line. You can try online scholarhip searches, there are books (I don't have the names). Also, if you are a member of your schools Phi Theta Kappa or Honors program there are usually scholarships for them (so I hear, I wasn't offered any!) Good luck:) -A
soulshine 0 #16 June 4, 2005 For those that have pm'd me or asked on here: Yes, I have filled out the fafsa paperwork. I don't qualify for the pell grant but I am eligible for the loans. Even with the loans I am coming up about $5,000 short. I did the military thing but the issue there is that I only have 15 months left in the Reserves and then I'm out. They won't give you any tution assistance if you have less than two years left. My GI Bill is still good but I was going to use that for living expences. Oh well, it's back to the library again to try to find more moolah out there to educate my sorry ass. I have a 3.7 GPA and I cant even get some cash for school. The best bet is find a company that will pay for your school while you work, thats what I am doing. The jobs are out there you just have to look. I think you have a better chance of getting some school funds that way then asking for free cash.. Good luck bro if you find some of that secret cash let me know.. Today was my last FINAL for the semester. Some day I will have the best staff in the world!!!
