jumper03 0 #1 June 9, 2005 I'm filling out an application and they ask for desired salary. Research shows that in the area the position pays: 25th percentile $34K median $43K 75th percentile just over $69K So, would you go big and ask for the top pay? Or just stick with the middle ground?Scars remind us that the past is real
kelel01 1 #2 June 9, 2005 Somewhere in between. I'd go $50-55.

Go big! Worst they can say is, "Well, according to our research, the median, blah blah,", and then maybe they'll offer somewhere between median and 75th. If you don't ask for it, they won't give you more than the absolute minimum they can get away with. Seriously, go big. If you have the balls to ask for the top, they might just believe you deserve it. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? AggieDave 6 #4 June 9, 2005 Jobs are like swooping...go big! Ok, seriously, the $50-55k range would probably be prudent.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

I normally in that case would put "open for negotiation" you dont want to shoot yourself in the foot either way Let them tell you what range they are looking to hire you at after they hear your skills. She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto
Buried 0 #6 June 9, 2005 depends how bad you want the job and need the money. If i saw an application that had a really high # for the experience of the person i'd throw it out Where is my fizzy-lifting drink?
panzwami 0 #7 June 9, 2005 Leave it blank. Go through the interview process and convince them that you are the person they want to hire. Then you'll be in a much better position to negotiate salary.

yardhippie 0 #9 June 9, 2005 You rarely get what you dont ask for! Its a philosophy for sales. but you should weigh in the other factors, education, experience, etc... eeneR 3 #10 June 9, 2005 Also make sure you have ammo to explain why you thing you should get x amount of dollars. "Well I feel that my experince in this that or the other puts me in the top end of the spectrum for skills in this position" You want to be able to sell youself to them and why they should pay you more. Course that is more of the interview process...She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto

This is CORRECT pay attention please: I have been in hiring before, and I did NOT look at resumes where anyone put in a 'desired salary'!!! Even if they ask you for it, always say 'negotiable' or 'open for discussion' etc. Then at the interview, you look him/her square in the eye and ask for the gawddang ceiling and know you're worth it. I wouldn't ask for the 75%. I would go higher. And if asked why I thought I deserved such a high salary, again, dead confident, look them in the eye and say 'Mr. Smith, I am worth it. I have the skills, I have the desire, I have the leadership. I am worth it for your company.' If they come back with a lower offer which they might, it is then at your consideration. Remember, you will NEVER get more than what you offer, so DON'T EVER OFFER FIRST. It seriously helps to listen to either positive affirmations, or motivational lectures the hour to half hour prior to going into the interview. You will exude confidence if you absorb it prior. You need to sell the interviewer on YOU, not what the job is, what your education is, what other people in the field are doing...you want Mr. Smith to know that unequivocably, he MUST have YOU on his team or he is blowing it big time. -Just Jaye's little tip on interviews and employment. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. Rebecca 0 #13 June 9, 2005 Oh shit - I didn't read that first part about filling in an application. Definitely leave it open to discussion and start with the 75th if they ask. That (to me) says, "Money later, let's talk about the job and the work and the company first." The 75th percentile will likely not get you dismissed if it comes up after a period of interviewing. If they ask at that point, they're probably seriously considering you. If you feel your work is worth the 75th, ask for it. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?
