WatchYourStep 0 #1 June 9, 2005 If so what do you ride? I've got a 2005 Yamaha R1. It is a beast of a machine. Anyone have any tips for wheelie riding? I'm just starting to mess around in 1st gear and find the right spot to bring it up. "You start off your skydiving career with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. blondegrl 0 #2 June 9, 2005 My boyfriend has a 2003 Honda 954. He does his wheelies in 2nd gear and now the second gear is going out of it. Becareful and have fun!!
Sebazz1 2 #3 June 9, 2005 I can get the front wheel up on my FXDXI Super Dyna Glide off of the line...
GeordieSkydiver 0 #4 June 9, 2005 Yeah, I currently ride a VFR400RR, not much of a wheelie machine, but it can be done. I used to ride a 94 Blade, now that was a handful, 6000rpm in first the front would come up, hit the balance point (the front goes light and you feel like you're almost gonna fall off backwards) snick it into 2nd and off you go, same for 3rd, I've seen my speedo jump round to 120mph on coming down from a wheelie.Make sure you cover that back brake though, and learn to bring the front down quickly using it, I didn't learn that early enough and flipped the bike with someone on the back.... Be prepared to change front fork seals more often and maybe even getting them straighten if you really bang the front down.Lee _______________________________ In a world full of people, only some want to fly, is that not crazy? http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk

tsisson 0 #6 June 9, 2005 I've been riding sport bikes and sport touring for over 15 years. I'm on a 2001 FZ1 currently. I'm not a big wheelie sort of guy, although I can bring it up when I want to. Sort of out grew wheelies as I got older. The R1 should bring the front up just by rolling it on in 1st gear, at any RPM above 6K. If you clutch it up in 1st, you are asking to loop it. My advice, wear your gear...be safe.

I think the first part of advice is don't be a knucklehead and start doing wheelies wearing your jeans trying to look cool.. Put on the leathers first.. Wheelies can be done in a lot of different ways, and if you have to ask here how to do it on an R1, please go out and RIDE that bike a bit more.. cause I can't really think of a bike where it would be easier to get the front wheel off the ground, in almost ANY gear.. FrEaK_aCcIdEnT 0 #8 June 9, 2005 i have an o3 gsxr 600. turned almost 16,000 so far. probably getting a gsxr1000 next spring. Like the r1 but im stuck on suzuki. I have switched to GP shift. went 520 conversion and changed gearing to -1 up front and +2 in the rear. much more low end and only 5mph taken from top end. as for wheelies.... better to practice on a smaller cc bike. much more forgiving on mistakes. that r1 will have u sittin on ur but if ur not careful. well anything can have u loosing the rear of ur jeans to concrete. I dont do much stunting, but... u have 2 options with that large of a displacement. throttle it up. (roll on throttle and the front end will come up) clutch it up. slightly pull in the clutch to the friction zone. and its a split second manuver. u dont let off the throttle at all u just do a quick slip of the clutch and re-enguage it but quickly. (not harshly though) front will float right up. more advice. the yamahas have a very narrow point of balance from what i know. the best for range of balance point is honda. be careful have fun and practice practice practice in an area were u are not putting anyone in harms way. i.e. parking lot on a sunday(cops will still give u grief though) what is ur experiance on bikes? not trying to offend u just curious!!! edit: QuoteI think the first part of advice is don't be a knucklehead and start doing wheelies wearing your jeans trying to look cool.. GeordieSkydiver 0 #9 June 9, 2005 I forgot to add, take out shares in a company that makes clutch plates. Try second gear roll on's on the R1, 1st will likely bite you in the ass like the blade did me.Lee _______________________________ In a world full of people, only some want to fly, is that not crazy? http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk
WatchYourStep 0 #10 June 9, 2005 Thanks for the suggestions. I never do anything even remotely daring with a passenger or without my leathers. I think my biggest thing is I shift before I give the bike enough time to get into its real powerband. I can't get myself to just romp the throttle. I'm still getting comfy with the bike. I've only got 3000 miles on this one and never tried to ride wheelies on my past bikes, but they had the juice. I just want a little lift nothing super. I'll keep you posted. GeordieSkydiver 0 #11 June 9, 2005 The first time you're two up, in the wet, coming round a corner with the back spinning and the front lifting.....stop right there. Sell the bike. Pushing it further than that is why I have scars, and why I now ride a 400cc sports bike.Lee _______________________________ In a world full of people, only some want to fly, is that not crazy? http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk
WatchYourStep 0 #12 June 9, 2005 No offense taken by asking my experience. I started out on a little Honda 50 when I was 10. Then when I turned 16 I started riding my dad's Honda Sabre, then I got my own Honda 450. It was a step down in power but it was a nice looking little bike. After that I got an old school Suzuki 1000 and now this. By no means do I plan on trying anything like this out on the street. Riding wheelies has never interested me before, but I've got an itch now that I want to scratch. "You start off your skydiving career with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. FrEaK_aCcIdEnT 0 #13 June 9, 2005 well have fun! if u wait u can purchase the things that will portect the bike in an event that u have to bail at low speed and it meets the pavement. (extended frame sliders, swing arm sliders, crash cages <---- Very good investment) here is a couple link for crash cage and a good site for great info on stunting!!! www.stuntlife.com there cages are very good and u can find them on ebay sometimes. also first thing u want to get on that thing cause i dont think the r1's come stock with it like suzuki's... get a steering damper! will save ur rear on high speed wobbles. tank slappers are scary! Crazy thing is when I bought the bike brand new I beat the hell out of them on the price and got one hell of a deal. When I totaled it it was only 3 months old. My insurance company gave me blue book value which turned out to be more than I paid for
FrEaK_aCcIdEnT 0 #21 June 9, 2005 SWEET, well i wouldnt fare that well... upside down plus way to many miles to go bluebook. but its taken care of and will last for many 10's of thousands more miles to come. My best bet is for it to get stolen cause i got a theft policy at the dealer that will pay for up to 5000 of the loan after insurace is done with what they will pay. so that will pay it off! lol... WatchYourStep 0 #24 June 9, 2005 It's not a picture of my bike, but one off of Yamaha's website. That is the color of bike I purchased. So the picture is and isn't my bike. I wanted the black originally, but after seeing them side by the side the red looked so much better. "You start off your skydiving career with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. SkiD_PL8 0 #25 June 9, 2005 A couple of people told you roll ons are the way to go, I disagree. Clutching up wheelies is the most controlable way to do them. It is the most predicatable. If you don't beleive me go watch some stunt videos and watch how the guys that do it for a living bring them up. Have fun and don't die. Greenie in training.
