Slowfaller 0 #1 June 9, 2005 Slowfaller is posting so it must mean he is going somewhere Tuesday I'm leaving for Anchorage and we have plans to go to Denali. Orignally we were going to just wander through the park but realized we're not hardcore hikers. I guess Denali will bus you in and out from your campsite to day hike which sounds a lot safer and cheaper because I won't have to buy a lot of equipment. Just looking for any stories or pictures from any of you dz.com'ers if you've been to Denali, or Fairbanks for the solstice festival. My friends have asked if I wanted to jump but I declined because I wont have time to get current before I leave. When a bear charges, you pull out your knife, stab your buddy in the leg, and then run like hell! (The theory is that your buddy will now be running more slowly than yourself, and therefore will be the distraction for the bear while you escape.) Don't make the mistake of spraying the pepper spray around the perimeter of the campsite figuring that it will repel bear intruders. That actually works to attract them instead, as they can smell it quite a ways off. You have to save it for when they actually charge. Easier said than done, I'm sure. Good luck, and enjoy.
