The baby bird

Recommended Posts

It thought you were going to feed it. The trilling sound was it saying Hi Mom! You just fed a child to a monster.

a monster??:S My snake is a cutey!

Interestingly, while the snake was inspecting the baby bird, the bird did another funnel display to the snake ("are you my momma???"). the snake just backed off for a second, then continued inspecting.

And I always feed "children" to my snake, she's not quite big enough to handle a full-grown rat.>:(

My brother used to have a snake. They eat live things. A bird that's going to die anyway is a better meal in some ways than a cute little baby mouse. When he used to buy them, they'd come in a little box with air holes, that had a picture of a cute little dancing mouse, saying "at last I found a home" :P

Some home. But a snake's gotta eat what a snake's gotta eat, and Bob was pretty cool as snakes went.

Kinda why I never got a snake. Snakes are cool, I watched a roommate feed mice to a small constrictor, beautiful milk snake, bizarre process watching something eat something else 3 times wider than it's own head. I just wouldn't want to have to feed a baby anything to anything else.
Live and learn... or die, and teach by example.

My snake, Elaphe, didn't know what to do with the bird at first. She's only eaten rats and mice. So she spent about 15 minutes just inspecting the bird, running her neck over it, etc. She couldn't figure out that beak thing or the long stick-like legs, etc. But after a while I guess she just decided, hey, it's small and moving, I'm gonna just eat it.

I thought it was an ok idea until I read this. Sure feed the bird to the snake, but I pity the poor baby bird sitting there in absolute fear while the snake inspected and touched it for 15 minutes.

I know thats natural and you couldn't do anything about it, but still, its like a serial killer poking his victim with a knife for 15 minutes before he finally starts stabbing. [:/]

The baby bird did not appear to be frightened. This was a nearly-newborn bird that didn't even have its eyes open yet. It appeared as though the baby bird really did not know what was going on.

AAGGGHHH!!! Holy crap! I just read the first post, and I was all, "Awww, what a kind, sweet, gentle, nurturing man!" and then you put it in a box, and I thought, "Awww, he's gonna rescue it!" and then you FED IT TO THE SNAKE. >:(:([:/]

'Course, then I laughed... :D

Speedy- that was really well written for full comedic/ shock value. ;)

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

Nope, even though the outcome ratio is against a person with a premie like the one you described, after reading this again... The snake gets mashed and the bird wins.

Its always about the underdog. Go birdie, Go birdie...

Personally- I think Skymedic should have pilotdave fly him in get the bird, then fly to Austin and see if Jessica could help.

Does anyone remember the long thread about the puppy mill in Alabama or somewhere that I was going to break into and steal the puppies???? I learned about it from a breeder there and she gave me the layout of the property. Wow, what great ideas you all came up with.. All black gear landing in the perimeter. Black water paint on SUV, wash it off in car wash... Another team cutting the fence and exiting through the neighbors yard. Puppies in pillow cases... Soundproof carriers -black, unsrew lightbulbs, stuff like that... good thread...

I was reading a few websites about hand-raising wild newborn birds. I was right, even the experts don't have a real good record at it. Did you know that baby birds have to be fed every 15 minutes, pretty much around the clock??:o
Now that's the advantage of my snake: she's cold-blooded, so she only needs to be fed once every two weeks.
Yesterday she had a small rat, followed by a baby bird for dessert, so today she's looking very full and contented.B|

If i can be serious for a moment:

I actually did think that this was the best course of action, even though, truth be told, it did disturb me quite a bit. It really seemed to me as though this bird was very probably going to die, and it was better that the bird quickly gave up its life for the next link in the chain of life, rather than die slowly and just rot.

The ways of nature are disturbing to some of us sometimes. I do kill these half-grown rats for my snake, and I find it very disturbing to do it, but it is part of the life cycle. Why do I keep a snake if I find it disturbing to procure its food? Hell, I don't know, snakes are cool. Your catfood and dogfood was made by killing some animal somewhere, even though you didn't have to do it yourself. Predation is a part of life.

Keep it away from here! We have a nest of baby birds, just learning to fly! Very cute, one just couldn't quite get the hang of it. We put it back up on a branch, and we saw Momma Bird coming back to feed it, so I guess its okay. Then, another bird thought it was going to make its nest in a big pot of flowers on my deck! I took the pot off the deck to a less traveled area. I think she has continued to make the nest, because it appears larger. Now, how do I 'tend to' the flowers without disturbing the nest and upcoming new arrivals?:S

Hehe! The bird abandoned her nest making in my flower pot and the other nest of birds have all gotten their wings and flown away! No need for any predators here! Yep, no need for any snakes here!!!!

OK, here it is June 2005, and it HAPPENED AGAIN!!

Same place (right in front of the door to the garage), same bird species...except now there's TWO of them! possibly three.

When I came out this morniing, I'm not sure, but it looked as though the parents were swooping down to feed them as they sit there among the dead leaves.

So what do I do? Can they survive down there, or should I just feed my snake again???

f&*king birds. why cant they be more careful with their kids.
