Nearly one third of all lottery winners eventually need bankruptcy protection. Why? Because they do crazy things with it.

I've already talked with my wife about what to do if we came into a financial windfall. We figured the first thing we'd do is pay off debt. If we came into, say, $100,000, we'd pay off our private student loans with it. If we came into $200,000, we'd pay of the student loans, our SBA loan, and her car. $500,000? We'd pay the above plus our private loans plus our second mortgage. Then we'd not make any decisions on what to do with what's left for 60 days.

What's most amazing about people who come into all that money is the things they don't realize. For example, someone wins ten million and buys the 2 million dollar house. Along with the house, they need to buy furniture. They then decorate it. Then the dishes. Add to that the landscaping. Then they'll find they're dropping 5k a month on utilities. Add to that the taxes, and they find out that this 2 million investment is a pretty big financial hit for the long run.

Then there are other forces - family members wanting gifts, etc. Most people don't realize how easy it is to burn through money. Especially when that 10 million dollars is actually, after taxes, 5 million, and the five million dollars comes in payments of $50k per year.

What strikes me about this guy is that he has a 15 year plan! This cat KNOWS that his money will not grow by tomorrow.

My wife is hotter than your wife.

Very few people who win the lottery plan to be lame-o losers in 5 years. It just kind of happens.

If his plan works out, in 5 years he'll feel like he "deserves" all that money that he's derived from it. Hate to say it, but if he wants to make more money from it I'll be he ends up entitled.

It's a gift. One does with it what one wants, and then reaps the consequences of that.

I think he's choosing to use his gift wisely. True, no one plans to become a loser after winning, but he's specifically planning to be an even bigger winner - the smart way. Lawrocket said:

You know what? The interest he earns will be his and he will be entitled to it. But he's got advisers, whose best interests lie in advising him wisely, and he's no bumpkin who thinks $1 million is enough to buck-wild.

Still... money does change people.

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

Yeah, me either. I like to think I'd pass the test and not become a complete new-money asshole.

If I win I'll be back in college, but this time without a full-time job to demand all my spare time. :)

while paying off your bills will make you debt free you still won't have any mopney ( except for what you WERE paying on those bills)
look at it like this. you owe $XX dollars on bills you win 100,000 if you pay off your bills you dont have the 100,000 in your pocket anymore.(I know 100,000 isn't alot of money but its the amount we are using for this example

BUT if you took that 100,000 and invested it wisely, you could: )
-pay off your bills
-still have $$$ in your pocket
-watch your money grow in the positive column which becomes a great asset
- ease up when it comes time for retirement because you will have learned enough about investment that its like a new job for you that pays you for nuturing your money

a personal theory/adage of mine is;
"why use you own money when you can use someone elses"

keep your big money and borrow against it while it grows for you
