cutaway1 3 #1 June 16, 2005 A friend of mine was recently told at a particular dropzone that he was not allowed to jump there anymore, apparently because the owner vehemently dislikes a friend that he hangs out with. Does anyone know if a public business, a dropezone, can arbitrarily refuse service to anyone. This was not connected to any infraction of rules. The owner doesn't let people jump there he personally dislikes, or people who frantenize with people he doesn't like. Is this legal. He also will fire any employees that jump at other competing skydive operations in their free time. This doesn't seem right. Thank you,SCR-
SkiD_PL8 0 #2 June 16, 2005 Clicky! Edited because after reading that article more thoroughly it seems service cannot legally be refused to the public if their presence isn't detrimental to the business. I don't think not liking someone falls into that category. Greenie in training.
bodypilot1 0 #3 June 17, 2005 It's his house, he can do as he wants. If he fires the people that work for him for jumping at other DZ's, he'll soon be the only one working for himself. Be safe. kelpdiver 2 #6 June 17, 2005 Where Ed and I are, a DZ does that sort of thing at its own risk. There are 6 other places in the general viscinity. It seems especially unwise to ban people who merely associate with disliked individuals. There just aren't enough of us around to drop anyone with a Bacon index under 3. Where you are, may not have so many choices, though if he's firing people for going to another, there's at least one, right? The only reason it might not be legal or permissible for him to do so might be related to a lease at a public airport.
lawrocket 3 #7 June 17, 2005 First - http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=882788#882788"]Clicky[/url] to a little warning I did some time ago. On another point, who knows if it's illegal. Maybe the state you are in has a law that precludes refusing service to someone who associates with those the discriminator does not like. I don't know if there is, but maybe. Ask a lawyer from your state. I don't think that "friends" is a protected class, either. If the DZO discriminated on the basis of race, color, creed, women, etc., that would be bad. Maybe canning employees for associating is not wrongful termination, but they may be able to get unemployment for it. Who knows? I don't know if the US Constitution gives the right to refuse service to Scientologists, though. If so, Tom Cruise would be screwed, eh? But I think most of us would give up skydiving for a while for a night with Katie Holmes or Nicole Kidman. Not me, though. I'm married. Maybe if he discriminated against lawyers. We aren't a protected class. I hope Hammo doesn't read these forums... My wife is hotter than your wife.

kelpdiver 2 #12 June 17, 2005 QuoteI asked a legitmate Q.......and yes I am like the dog in the beggin strips commercials you'll be disappointed. Kevin Bacon has starred in so many movies with so many different large ensembles of actors that essentially everyone has worked with him, or with someone that did. The original form was to name the links within 6 links. If Chow Yun Fat worked with X who worked with Y who worked with Kevin, he would have a bacon index of 3. It seems like very few are higher than 3 now.
