bertusgeert 1 #1 June 20, 2005 I often find it beneficial to ask people who might have more insight than me for advice. I am currently a Economics/Finance Major. I have one semester before my class-choices begin to affect me as far as a decision between the current and an Accounting/Finance major (which would, because classes don't merge, take one year longer). I have heard from many people (professors and others) that Acc/Fin will be much more beneficial, i'll get a better job easier, etc. I don't dislike accounting, but love economics. I like the fact that Economics allows me to interpret current political choices, whereas accounting only gives me insight into the guts of business. Economics is therefore more appealing, since I would like to go Polisci, but it will take me nowhere. I could also do a math minor, which, with finance seems to be feasible (t/f?) I plan to do my MBA later on. What will the impact of this choice be on my career? (as one retired finance official told me: "I never met an economist I didn't like. The problem is, you have a meeting to make a decision and you walk out with more opinions than answers.) --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei! pleifer 0 #2 June 20, 2005 Finance and Econ. is a lot of math at the higher levels, so a math minor would be good because it would make the classes seem easier, but possibly redundant. As far as which to choose, with an accounting degree it is quite a bit easier entering the workforce, or at least that is what I am seeing with the grads this year. but as a business administration/ finance major, I don't think I could stand a entry level accounting position very long. But an economics (my minor) I find the fewer possibilities more attractive. Just a benefit analysis. Really the answer comes down to you. Would you rather go for something you enjoy more, or something you can be employed quicker. _________________________________________ The Angel of Duh has spoke

LittleOne 0 #4 June 20, 2005 An Acc/Fin major will help you maximize your earnings straight out of school and for years to come, especially if you are quite sure that you will not acquire a MBA. In the long run, you MAY not have as many options to branch out into different disciplines within the wonderful world of business, including marketing, manufacturing, IT and HR. Since you stated that you love Economics, are likely to pursue a MBA and are considering Poli Sci, the Econ/Fin major will probably serve you better. It is not impossible to go from Acc/Fin to Poli Sci but the Econ/Fin undergrad work will provide a better basis. If you choose to get the MBA in a Finance related field, Economics is an excellent undergrad platform. Having an Acc/Fin undergrad major is not bad in this case but may be redundant. First and foremost, I would recommend that you follow your passions. With an Econ/Fin bachelor's, it is unlikely that you will be working the register at McDonald's. On the other hand, I do not know any Accounting and Finance professionals (and I know a lot of them) that truly love what they do, myself included. Why do you think I started hurling myself out of planes? (just my highly biased $0.02)
