F***k it--I'm staying in Texas.

Recommended Posts

I'm passing on moving to L.A. I'm just not at that point in my life anymore. I've lost the youthful fire in my belly to do whatever it takes to make it as a filmmaker. When I was about twenty or twenty-one, I used to show up at production offices carrying boxes of Krispy Kreme doughnuts with my resume glued inside the box lids. When my department head would give me more work than I could possibly do in a twelve hour work day, I'd stay for hours after everybody else had wrapped, finish the work, and then put myself up in a hotel room so that I could grab three or four hours of sleep before having to be back on location early the next morning. When I was not working (which was most of the time), I stretched my money as far as I could so that my time could be spent tracking down my next job. Did you know that if you show up at a 7-11 at around 11:30 at night, they'll give you the old hot dogs they were about to throw away?

Now, at twenty-five, the prospect of living off of ramen noodles so that I can pay the rent on a $1300/mo. 675 sq. ft. apartment so that I can live in L.A. so that can I work 14 hrs/day, 6 days/week locking down corners of empty fields and inventorying walkie talkies so that I can be around the film industry so that I can have a small chance at a "big break" is much, much, MUCH less appealing.

Staying in Central Texas and eventually taking over my dad's real estate business is much, much, MUCH more appealing. Knowing where I'll be working next week and knowing that I won't be working next weekend is much, much, MUCH more appealing. Staying near my amazing friends and family is much, much, MUCH more appealing. Having a stable adult life is much, much, MUCH more appealing.

My days as a set gopher are over. I'll keep screenwriting and hopefully sell a few more shorts. Maybe someday the gods will smile on me and let me sell a feature, but if I do, I'll do it from Texas.

Sorry, Texas, but you're stuck with me. California, you just lucked out.
I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names.

Admit it, you just can't deny your sweaty, vulgar love for Brains!:o:ph34r:

Welcome back to the area. Whenever I make it to SSM again, I'll have to say hi and share a beer with you.:)
As for the move, I'm a big fan of "Do what makes you happy". If you're not happy, what's the point?

Ahh, the transision sooner or later it reaches us all.

Later on in life your gonna find the desisions get even harder.
never quite shure if it's better to stick with a cul-de-sac or go for the autopista.

Glad you're staying Douva! As you stated - this will ultimately make you happy - so do it!

It's funny how the older you get the less you want to put up with:D:D

Dayum, dood! You're only twenty five? You talk like some old fart of 40! I started losin' 'fire in my belly' when I was about 50! Life's a gamble and there's no such thing as free lunch. Good things don't happen over-night. If, you REALLY want something, you go for it and keep fighting till you get it. It's real easy to hang-on to that 'security blanket'!

I know that sometimes you have to stick it out for the things you really want, but honestly, what I really want now is to stay in Central Texas, get established in the real estate industry, meet the right girl someday, and have a family. People's interests and priorities change as they age. Even if I could go out to L.A., get grandfathered into the DGA right away, and start working as an assistant director, I don't think I'd do it. The money is good, but it's just not what I'm looking for anymore. I felt like I owed it to myself to go out there and capitalize on the last eight years of my life, but I realized while I was out there on my recent scouting expedition that what I really owe myself is to do what I think will make me happy in the long-term, and I'm pretty sure that's what I'm doing. The last eight years weren't wasted--I learned a lot about life, as well as the film industry. Who knows, maybe the screenplay about Rob Harris that I've been working on for the last 18 months will start a bidding war, and I'll be considered a Hollywood success after all. But if not, I'm happy just making a living putting shopping centers in small towns.

BTW... good to hear from you! Well, you're still young and there'll be a lot of opportunities that will come your way. It's all a learning curve and you have choices. Good luck to you in finding the choice that makes your life what you hope it will be. Maybe, that big hollywood thing will be it. At least, you gave it your best shot.

Jason and I are so happy that you are staying. All we've been talking about since you said you were moving is how much we wanted you to stay and how things wouldnt be the same without our best friend. And now we can have that kick ass summer we were planning, and my b-day vacation together!! And we are still going to give you your own room in our house, just in case your new crazy neighbors give you any trouble! We love you, Douva!:)

Okay, I've only been in the state for 2 weeks, but I have found it a very pleasant experience. The people are very kind, the dz's great and there are so many similarities to Georgia.

No, I'm not moving here...but I've really been welcomed with open arms by everyone I've come in contact with. If I were to consider such a move, I don't think it would be a drastic adjustment for me.

Never know what the future could have in store for me, though. :)
