Spyware....AGAIN!

Recommended Posts

Conway, I use Spy Sweeper, and the only time it pops up is if there is some thing trying to get it. It's just letting you know to either accept that or not.

Even when I add a Favorite to my list, Spy Sweeper will ask if I want to keep that.

I love my Spy Sweeper:)

Spysweeper said it got rid of 11 things today. I was so relieved until I went to Hotmail, clicked through 2 e-mails and got another pop-up. Argh! >:( Then, a message came up from Spy Sweeper saying I have Twain-tech in memory. At least we're getting it narrowed down!

ok, so on these "free" detectors, are they only free to detect, but you must buy them to delete or quarantine whatever they find in your 'puter?
I am very frustrated by the amount of CRAP on my puter, and the Adaware says it found 270 more, but it won't delete until I purchase.
On the other hand, Eanthology and another one that I own lock up as soon as they start running.

I am Pissed, and not able to contact the companies, cuz I can't get the pages to run. What do I do?

Yeah, I don't think you have the right version. I've never paid for it either. Although, it's not getting off the pop-up that has connected itself to my homepage whenever I log on, but that's a whole other issue.

Andrea,

I had a problem that sounds like yours - every morning when I started IE for the first time I got an advertising popup that Adaware wasn't detecting. The URL always started 'http://ads.x10.com...', so I did a search for files containing that text. Turned up two files, a dll and a cfg, both called 'Xoff'. I moved them into another area, and solved the problem. So I zapped those suckers and have been popup free ever since!

You might want to try something like that. Erm... at your own risk, of course :)
HTH.

I think I'm going to try Spysweeper when I get home tonight. I've got Norton and Skybot, both tell me there's no immediate threat, but my computer is still running like crap and I'm getting popups. (I know I'm a little low on memory too, but I think I need to try and clean the computer one more time before I attempt to add memory!) At least the porn is finally gone- that's what prompted me to download skybot and buy and install Norton!

I know some of the "geeks" are sick of these threads, but its really helped me!

Are you keeping current with your updates? When your online update reminders come up are you downloading them at all? Just wondering because my friend wouldn't and it caused her system to not be protected from all the new spyware that would be created sent to her.
Please feel free to reply to my posts and pm's, but only if you're smart enough to understand what they really mean.

Hey everybody, thanks for the suggestions. Actually, Adaware is what I do have for free that keeps freezing up. Rev Jim, nice of you to send me a link, but everytime I click into a link, I freeze up, too.
Noadware is what I ran that found the most (240) bad owies, but it says to delete, I must buy, so I am going to try Spy Sweeper and Win Patrol, and see what happens.
I have Noadware running right now, or I wouldn't even be able to be online. Boy is this frustrating. I have better things to do than to be messing with this.
When we were in South Carolina, there was a nerdy little computer store where I went for help. Nice guys, not expensive, knew their stuff. NOT HERE, Geez! I feel like a roadtrip!

Beth, I still think you are running the syware program that is actually spyware, not a real remover.
This is the original of that software, not the bad one:http://www.lavasoft.com/

As far as Norton goes, Symantec is a huge company, and therefore a target, not to mention you get the privledge of paying for what many times is iffy protection and quite often is a great resource hog. I, among others here I have converted, swear at Norton all the time. We swear by Avast. www.avast.com which is FREE to home users, and damn good to boot.

Well, I would agree that its a bit of a resource hog! And my computer goes through some extra time consuming steps when I turn it on now. But, after being hit so badly by some spyware programs, I realized I was a bit lax as far as my computer was concerned and I needed to take some steps to protect it. I should have posted here asking for advice first! My bad!;)

(And the kicker is, its still running like crap!:S)

Yet another reason I regret not living closer to Skydive Chicago. I make house calls up here on a regular basis. One person has an old Pentium 266 laptop that runs browsers as fast as my 1.6Gig laptop, and another guy has a 2 gig desktop that, due to his online habits, I literally clean at least once every 2 weeks.

There is hope for any system, even yours. The hard part is finding someone willing to sit down with you and show you how to keep it running smooth.

Yup, that is what I had in South Carolina..Thanks again for the advice. I do have the lavasoft, but it doesn't seem to be catching more than 6 or 7 per, but that's better than nothing. I tried Avast last night at the suggestion of someone on the eanthology hotline, and while it started to catch some stuff, it TOO froze up. I think that I will try to run it while I have this freebie program keeping me clean(er)

Well, I'm going to try and "decrap it" and look into a memory upgrade. Both should help! It wasn't an expensive computer (emachines from Costco) but its all I've got and all I can afford for a while! I sure am learning a lot though, just because I have no choice and I don't want some machine to get the better of me! Getting rid of the porn was a major victory for me!

Thanks for giving me hope!:)

!!! Alarm Bells !!!

Ad Aware, from Lavasoft www.lavasoft.com Is a free product, and does not hold you for ransom. It deletes without prompting for money.

Adware, from www.adware.com actually INSTALLS spyware.

Make sure you have the right one.
