BillyVance 35 #1 June 28, 2005 OK so the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds have nothing on the Russian's… All right.... all you Blue Angel fans and fanatics...ya gotta appreciate the skills of these guys flying Russian designed aircraft.... Zenister 0 #2 June 28, 2005 those are 'hands down' some of the most manuverable fighters on the planet... I've talked to two US pilots who would rather fly them simply for the sheer joy of it than any fighter we've ever made.....____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. Viking 0 #5 June 28, 2005 now if only those two planes didn't represent half the country gross income...... The Russians have always built amazing planes!! look at the MiG 15 and the chaos it brought in Korea!! It took us a while to get the F-86 over there to combat them. Ofcourse they used to enslave there designers and hold there families hostage until they got what they wanted. I guess that gave them a little motivation to stay late and skip the bar. AggieDave 6 #10 June 28, 2005 It had little red stars on it, and the pilot had one on his helmet so it HAD to be a Mig, it just so happens that that model of Mig looked exactly like a F-5 our military used. EDIT: I finally remember what plane it was.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
RevJim 0 #11 June 28, 2005 Looked quite a bit like an L-39 too. Edit: Thiough I'm not sure, as it's been some time since I watched it....It's your life, live it! Karma RB#684 "Corcho", ASK#60, Muff#3520, NCB#398, NHDZ#4, C-33989, DG#

Something about depth-of-field getting compressed by using a super-telescopic lense. Like the picture of the skydivers that look like they're about to hit the airliner, or a lot fo the shots in Joe Jenning's "Good Stuff" where it looks like people are about 500 feet off the ground. Still cool planes and very agile... but they aren't that close.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

rocketfeuille 0 #19 June 28, 2005 The longer the lens, the flatter the image. The planes are pretty spankin' close, but they're not that close. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if, in the second photo, the top plane was actually flying next to (not directly above) the bottom plane. The astounding thing about the Blue Angels photos is that they were taken with a wide angle lens (evidenced by the distortion at the edges of the frame). So the planes in those pictures are actually closer than they appear.
freekflyguy 0 #20 June 28, 2005 I wonder if when members of the Blue Angels/Thunderbirds/Red Arrows think the same when they see pictures of formation skydives or CF or FF. Whilst the shots are very impressive there relative speed is not that great. I see a correllation here between what we do and what they do. Other than the different skill set for flying a fast jet is there any difference between this and say a cameraman flying close to a tandem or a large group of free flyers in formation? Edited to add Landing an aircraft on a carrier in rough seas, now that is impressive. BTW everyone knows the Red Arrows are the finest aerobatic pilots out there BuzzIt's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

SkydivingNurse 0 #22 June 28, 2005 Hopefully I'll see some good stuff here. No A-10, though, which sucks ass because the A-10 is the most beautiful plane ever designed by the hand of man. Looking forward to the skydiving demo. It's early so I might get to watch some skydiving and then go do some skydiving myself. Should be a good time. Every move is carefully choreographed to provide the maxium suggestion of danger while minimizing the risk as much as possible. if you ever get a chance, find out when the Birds or Angels will be in town and then watch the show from somewhere other than the airshow. Viewing the show from a "wrong" angle will give you a much better idea of their seperation. They're still close, but not near as close as you'd think. -Blind"If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
