BUBLHED 0 #1 October 27, 2008 I haven't jumped in 8 years. I will be doing refresher training to get current and comfortable again. Most of my jumps are on a PD 9 cell loaded at 1.15 I am looking into the Saffire 2 loaded at 1.3 after my 10 - 15 refresher jumps. Does this sound like a reasonable route to take? I WAS a pretty decent pilot before; fairly accurate, front riser dives to landing, etc. thanks for any input!!ATTACK LIFE ! IT'S GOING TO KILL YOU ANYWAY!!!! No. Over a hundred jumps at the same wingloading under a more modern design (take your pick, Safire, Sabre2, Pilot, etc.) where you learn low turns (including after plane-out) so you're not an unguided meat missle would be prudent. This is the most reasonable reference out there http://www.bigairsportz.com/pdf/bas-sizingchart.pdf Brian Germain knows way more than your local instructors and random internet people. AggieDave 6 #4 October 28, 2008 You're going to find a stark difference in how a modern design zp semi-elliptical canopy flies compared to your trusty old F111 canopy. I would recommend a good conservative wingloading, that we would give a student jumper, for a number of jumps. Think in the .75:1 to 1:1 range. You're going to read the above and scoff, but once you jump a Safire2, a Sabre2 or a Pilot, you'll understand why I said the above.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." BUBLHED 0 #5 October 28, 2008 Cool. I guess more performance for toggle turns, full stalls etc. From what I've read with more lift I should have good landings if I stay at my previous wingloading or below. correct? ( no interest in swooping at least not for a couple of hundred jumps) safety is a major concearn. I'll also be getting a V3 with Skyhook. Previous rig was a vector and never had any issues. Thanks!!!!!ATTACK LIFE ! IT'S GOING TO KILL YOU ANYWAY!!!!

AggieDave 6 #7 October 28, 2008 At those wingloadings things should be fine; however, the canopy will fly different and flare differently then you are used to. Spend some time and watch some jumpers come in, watch their patterns and flare. Talk to the instructors. I'm sure that you'll pick it up with out much problem pretty quickly. Its not rocket-surgery! --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
billvon 3,116 #8 October 28, 2008 I'd recommend a Pilot, Safire2, Sabre2 or Silhouette loaded at about 1.15 to 1 for now.
BUBLHED 0 #9 October 28, 2008 looks like the 209 safire 2 is it. 1.17 to 1 wingloading thanks for the advice!!ATTACK LIFE ! IT'S GOING TO KILL YOU ANYWAY!!!!
4chewnate 0 #10 October 28, 2008 Try PD's fly before you buy program. You can demo any canopy you want for two weeks for basically shipping costs. And they will help you decide what to start with. It's a no brainer. I don't understand anyone buying a canopy before they put at least a dozen jumps on it first. You'll have awesome landings. If you learn a bit about energy management you can even have landings where you take a step and stop.
Speer 0 #12 October 28, 2008 East or West coast??? Skydive San Diego has nice rental gear with Safire 2s, including 209s... Have fun and take it easy when returning. Get the timing down before taking up maneuvers you were doing before the lay-off. Russ Generally, it is your choice; will your life serve as an example... or a warning? erdnarob 1 #14 October 29, 2008 A Vector III with Skyhook and riser cover magnets + a Sabre 2-210 (loading 1.16 for you) for the most powerful flare and you have the best rig now available. Add a Vigil II and you are equiped like a king.Learn from others mistakes, you will never live long enough to make them all.
