Thanatos340 1 #1 June 30, 2005 Is the WFFC losing its allure?? It seems that this year there just isn’t quite the Buzz about the convention that I have seen in previous years. The DZ.com attendee’s list seems to be shrinking faster than its Growing. Very few people that I talk to who were there last year plan on going this year. Any speculation on why this is?? Too many other Major Boogies too close together?? (Skyfest, Lost Prairie, Summerfest) General Slump in the economy and outrageous gas prices keeping people closer to home???? Or is everyone just waiting till the last minute to start talking up the WFFC?? Or is this just in my imagination and Rantoul will be just as big as and better than previous years. eeneR 3 #2 June 30, 2005 My reasons for not going have nothing to do with the above. I cant jump, so im not going to spend the $$ to go. I may change my mind on that, but as of right now im not going. She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto
mx757 4 #3 June 30, 2005 yea, Seems like WFFC is shrinking.. it started at Quicy with the hassel & BS with the cops.. it's never been the same since.. lot my friends now go couch freaks instead.
jumpchikk 0 #4 June 30, 2005 It kind of freaks me out that you posted this thread just because I was thinking the same exact thing this afternoon. I was really thinking hard about going to WFFC, just because I've heard so much about it in the past and going and meeting new people, but for some reason, I've lost all desire to go (and I possibly have a free plane ticket to and from, how crazy am I?)... I even went on to look at how many people were going and was thinking for it being just a little over a month away, there sure aren't a lot of people showing interest... Just weird... get outta my head J
BillyVance 35 #5 June 30, 2005 My opinion was it just got too big for its britches. I only went one time, in 1997. So much shit happened, even though I had a blast jumping, with 48 made in 6 days, but I also watched one jumper slam into a camper and die on the spot, and the infamous Dead Mike bounced on the runway by the loading tents (he lived, which is a damn miracle). Once was enough for me. I would prefer the smaller well-organized boogies like Dublin and maybe Richmond Revisited, if I ever get up that way..."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
jumpergirl 0 #6 June 30, 2005 It's because SkyFest is going to replace WFFC.
chaoskitty 0 #7 June 30, 2005 I dont want to travel that far to pay that much for registration. The environment seems a little too uncontrolled for my comfort level. I go to 2 or 3 boogies per month. Rantoul would be worth it if there weren't so many other boogies.

billvon 3,107 #9 June 30, 2005 I wouldn't have gone this year if not for the Perris jet; that makes it a boogie I can go to for a weekend. Maybe I'm getting old, but the idea of spending 9 days in rain and heat, then listening to the parties that go on till 4am, isn't as appealing as it used to be. Whats sad is this past weekend I was a boogie. It had a rocking party that Saturday night, but I still only had a beer then drank water. Hung out for a couple of hours and turned in early. Damnit, that means I'm getting old isn't it? Or maybe its that today I'm in my suit for some interviews and driving around for those I was listening to my now usual station...news talk radio.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." ChasingBlueSky 0 #18 June 30, 2005 It's in my back yard so it isn't that big of a deal for me. A quick drive down one expressway brings me right to the exit. After a few years at Quincy I was tired of it and said I wasn't going to return (esp after the issues that last year). Last year was fun, but outside having my friends there it wasn't anything special (I can get most of that at Summerfest anyhow). Not sure if I am going this year or not.....read the thread from last year: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1204888#1204888 I had more fun at Couch Freaks for a lot less money despite the longer drive. Free beer, good parties, free food a couple nights as well, good jumps, easier to find people and vendors, easy to move away from the noise, etc._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... skinnyshrek 0 #20 June 30, 2005 Ditto, you pit a lot of thought into that one andy..lol Anyways, my experience is i had a blast in 2003. My only problem is too many young jumpers in the air. The partying was fun but the 6th day my body said ok enough..lol To be honest, the best boogie out there riht now is Dublin. We'll see if skyfest overtakes that one...lolhttp://www.skydivethefarm.com do you realize that when you critisize people you dont know over the internet, you become part of a growing society of twats? Snowwhite 0 #22 June 30, 2005 QuoteScrew that! WFFC Rules see you there Yep, that's what we're hearing here in the office anyway! Some people take a break for a year, and other faces fill in for the first time that same year, so the crowd changes but the family is still here. I know that the excitement we hear on the phones is great, and despite this rather dour thread, most of the threads on dz.com are very up. One of my favorite (and I don't know how to clicky) was a terrific post by Lew last year about " the WFFC is" and everything she (and everyone else) said was RIGHT ON. Meeting new friends, seeing old friends. Sharing great air time, and bringing home tremendous memories. See you in August, except you RevJim, see YOU in July so you can help set up this puppy!skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
Thanatos340 1 #23 June 30, 2005 I am not trying to knock the convention at all with this thread. I will definitely be there. I was just disappointed that more of my friends were going to be joining me. I had a Fantastic time last year and can’t wait to go back.

I've still got the letter on CD somewhere here from when the last jet backed out at the last minute. Hopefully they do get the approvals.
