Need help waking up in the morning

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have trouble getting up in the morning? I have been consistently late for work for the past 5 years. It is starting to be problematic. I just can't seem to wake up to my alarm clock. I have to be up by 5:00am at the latest to make it to work by 6:00am. I set my alarm for 4:30 and either snooze until 5:30 or sometimes I don't even hear the alarm clock til 6:00.

I am considering a wakeup service. Has anyone used one before? I found this one:

Has anyone heard of it or used it? Any other suggestions?

Here's what I did when I was a cadet and was waking up at or before 5am.

I got one of those old school alarm clocks, with thebells on top. It was something like $10 at Wal-Mart. Well, I would wake up every single time (I also put it across the room) on time without fail. You know why? It scares the ever living piss out of you when it goes off.

To add to what AggieDave said, get a REALLY loud alarm clock, and here is the key bit....

PUT IT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM!

That way you can't roll over, turn it off and go back to sleep.

Works for me

Get TWO alarm clocks, one next to your bed set at the first time, you will ignore it. The one with the bells on top across the room set for 10 minutes later. By the time you get the first one, then the second one turned off, you will be awake. I did this for one of my foster kids who had a truancy record at school, because he couldn't wake up.
I don't even own an alarm clock. If I tell myself I have to get up at a certain time, my body just wakes me up then. I don't know how.

I once saw that a MIT student was making an alarm clock that when it went off, it rolled around the room until you caught it and turned it off. Its somewhat hard to hit the snooze when your alarm clock is doing 25mph across your floor.

Keep your alarm away from you, where you will have to actually get up and turn it off. The act of getting up my trick your body into thinking its time to get up.

I think that is actually on the market now.

Everyone is right put your alarm clock on the other side of the room. Because of Crew (rowing and coaching) I've been getting up around 4:30 for the past 6 years. I had trouble getting up on time, but after I put the alarm clock on the other side of the room my problems ended. Now if I manage to sleep in until 6 on the weekends I'm happy.

I don't get enough sleep. That is definitely part of the problem. I try to get to bed by 10pm, but 11 is more realistic. I also work 11 hours most days, so I don't get home til 6:00 or worse 10:00 if I go jumping after work. There aren't enough hours in the day.

I'm in a coma when that alarm clock goes off, that's why I'm thinking the wake up call service might be the way to go.

Dude, I'm totally with you on this. I snooze for as long as I possibly can each morning - it's like my body is in charge, not my brain, and my body wants more sleep. Once I'm up, I'm up, but getting there takes supreme effort.

I'm not sure a bell alarm across the room would work though. My bf tends bar, so he would be pretty annoyed at having the ever loving piss scared out of him at 7 am.

I was thinking the same thing. My fiancée would freak out if that bell went off. She already hates waking up to the country music that plays on the alarm clock. I think I would be evicted to the couch.

One night a week he doesn't get home until after 3am, so I sleep in the other room. While that room is darker and cooler than the master br, it's easier for me to get up. Funny how a warm cozy body next to you makes getting up that much more unappealing...
