captain_stan 0 #1 October 23, 2008 When searching for sewing thread to be used in the construction and repair of products that encounter high UV exposure, I've found that polyester thread is rated nearly identical to Nylon for strength, weight, bulk, and melting temp, but polyester has the advantage of higher UV resistance. Can anyone tell me what properties make Nylon superior for the construction of our parachutes?
ChrisClark 0 #2 October 24, 2008 Polyester is more resistant to stretching and shrinking than nylon, making nylon the preferred fiber for applications where stretch and shock resistance are required. (One of the most important qualities of parachute fabric is its elasticity.) Also nylon is more abrasion resistance than polyester and is easier to dye. Hope that helps. hackish 8 #3 October 25, 2008 A few months ago I was reading an article about threads. I believe you will find that spectra is also more UV resistant. Besides expense the reason they don't use it is probably consistent with the comments above. -Michael
