Upset and a little scared

Recommended Posts

Under the circumstances, your landlord would be stupid to give you a hard time or try to enforce the lease. Especially since you could make it extremely difficult for him to release the apartment OR you could give him notice and allow him to show it while you are still there.

A few years back, I was in a similar situation- had my car vandalized and my apartment broken into within a month. (Also had my bag snatched while walking to the train- I was a walking crime wave![:/]) I did feel like I was targeted. My landlord was good about adding extra security (AFTER the burglary) - a new deadbolt and bars on the window- but I never felt safe there after that. We also had street parking, and the spaces near the building filled up quick. It got to the point where I was afraid to go out at night because I wouldn't have a "safe" place to park when I got home! But, I was also afraid to break my lease so I stayed. That was stupid! I lived in fear for a good 6 months! And the fact is, he wouldn't have taken a young woman like me to court to enforce his lease! Not when the reason I was moving was because I was afraid for my safety! I wouldn't have lost more than my security deposit! Learn from my mistake and get out of there as soon as you can! (Of, and get renters insurance just in case!)

Also...........if it comes to it...........let me know. I can most likely find someone that will "watch over you" until you move. There's lots of people out there that do "pro bono" body guard work when the the situation is right. I can ask around. Or you can talk to your local community policing station (If they have those there) and explain the situation. I'm sure you would have to really twist a cops arm for him to stop by and check up on a beautiful woman a few times a day. :D
